The continental divides the force of the water that falls on one side of them to flow in one direction , while the water that falls to the other side flows in the other direction due to gravity. Most of the water that falls on Minnesota drains through a number of rivers into the Mississippi River and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. In the southwestern part of the state , another high area or divide , causes water that falls in this area to drain southwest toward the Missouri River. Of course , the Missouri River eventually flows into the Mississippi River and then into the Gulf of Mexico. Of course , this particular photo was taken in Minnesota , although it is a continuation of the same gap. This photo was taken near Carroll , Iowa. The Lawrence Watershed runs through the northern part of the state. Water falls north of this rupture flowing north toward Hudson's Bay , in the far north of Canada. Water falling south of the Lawrence Basin flows either to the Mississippi River or to Lake Superior. The water that flows into Lake Superior eventually flows through the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. In places where there are two continental gaps , you can find triple points or triple points. On these three ways continental ruptures occur in Minnesota near Hibbing. The exact triple point of the rupture is inside the private ownership of t he Taconite mine , so it is not available to the public. Early Native Americans living in the area called the place a three-water hill. Looking at the picture below (source: 3ANorthAmerica-WaterDivides. png) you can find a few other triple points of view. One of the interests will be one that is located on the triple peak divide in Glacier National Park. The water that falls on this place flows in three directions; west from the Pacific Ocean , from the north to the Arctic Ocean and from the east to the Atlantic Ocean. It is apparently the only place on the planet where water flows into three separate oceans. Most of them may find photos of continental gaps as rather boring , especially if you compare Minnesota pictures of a picture of the continental gap located on Loveland Pass in Colorado. The Loveland Pass is located on the Great Divide , which separates the water that flows in the Pacific Ocean from the water that flows in the Atlantic Ocean. The Great Divide runs through a number of mountain ranges from North America to Tes in South America. Our 8th grade students used Minnesota road maps this week to map out the continental gaps in our state. Using this information , \nthey then map large rivers and lakes and determine how the water flows throughout our state. The anchor lake recreation area serves as and Southern travelers on U.S. 53 south of Minnesota. The historical marker designates this place as a unique place where a drop of rainwater can flow north into the Hudson Bay , east into the Great Lakes or south into the Gulf of Mexico. Although it does not meet the technical requirements of water flowing into three different oceans , such as triple peak in Montana Glacier National Park (if Hudson's Bay is part of the Arctic Ocean) or the Snow Dome on the border of Banff National Parks and Jasper in Canada (if Hudson's Bay is part of the Atlantic Ocean) , it marks the boundary of the three largest catchment basins in North America. The recreation area has a picnic area , toilets and vending machines. It is noteworthy that it was raining on the day we stopped in early August 2017. Anchor Lake Rest Area Fall comes early access to the recreation area is free. The Minnesota Department of Transportation listing for the recreation area is . The hydrological gap in North America of the Lawrence Basin (Green) extends from the triple peak in northwestern Montana to the tip of the Labrador Peninsula on the 60th parallel to the north.
