Candidates will gain an understanding of the principles and techniques used in planning characters and their story arcs and/or developmental journeys. Candidates will also develop their practical skills in producing a portfolio of material for use in a computer game or application. \nThis Unit is suitable for candidates who have previous experience in graphic design and/or animation, or an interest in animation, gaming, film production or any application where characters are fundamental to the digital product. The Unit is also suitable for candidates who do not have previous experience of computer games character creation or development. \nOutcomes \n1 Produce planning documentation for use when designing and developing characters in computer games or applications. \n2 Produce a fully developed character and an associated developmental journey. \n3 Present details of a character and evaluate feedback. \nRecommended entry \nEntry is at the discretion of the centre, although basic computer skills would be recommended. \nGeneral information (cont) \nUnit title: Computer Games: Character Creation (SCQF level 6) \nCredit points and level \n1 National Unit credit at SCQF level 6: (6 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 6*) \n*SCQF credit points are used to allocate credit to qualifications in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). Each qualification in the Framework is allocated a number of SCQF credit points at an SCQF level. There are 12 SCQF levels, ranging from Access 1 to Doctorates. \nCore Skills \nOpportunities to develop aspects of Core Skills are highlighted in the support notes of this Unit specification. \nThere is no automatic certification of Core Skills or Core Skill components in this Unit. \nNational Unit specification: statement of standards \nUnit title: Computer Games: Character Creation (SCQF level 6) \nAcceptable performance in this Unit will be the satisfactory achievement of the standards set out in this part of the Unit specification. All sections of the statement of standards are mandatory and cannot be altered without reference to SQA. \nOutcome 1 \nProduce planning documentation for use when designing and developing characters in computer games or applications. \nPerformance Criteria \n(a) Research characters in a range of computer games or mobile applications. \n(b) Design a template to be used when developing a character. \nOutcome 2 \nProduce a fully developed character and an associated developmental journey. \nPerformance Criteria \n(a) Produce one set of drawings of a proposed character from front, side and perspective viewpoints. \n(b) Produce detailed information on textures, clothing and equipment associated with the character. \n(c) Produce documentation outlining the character’s development in the game or application. \nOutcome 3 \nPresent details of a character and evaluate feedback. \nPerformance Criteria \n(a) Describe character details, concepts and model sheets to a group. \n(b) Evaluate feedback received and produce a report on the outcome of the presentation. \nNational Unit specification: statement of standards (cont) \nUnit title: Computer Games: Character Creation (SCQF level 6) \nEvidence Requirements for this Unit \nWritten/oral/product evidence is required to demonstrate that candidates have achieved all of the Outcomes and Performance Criteria.
