safety and promote patient focused quality care in a general practice or Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO).\nGeneral practices and ACCHOs are required to demonstrate sound clinical governance processes assessed against the RACGP accreditation standards (currently the 5th Edition).\nThe quality and safety of patient care is no longer confined to the individual practitioner. General practices and ACCHOs have responsibilities to work collaboratively with practitioners to continuously improve care for their patients and improve quality and safety.\nGovernance in the ACCHO sector is about Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health and welfare being in the hands of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples. Within an ACCHO, governance has several components including cultural governance, strategic governance, and clinical governance. The three components of governance ensure that local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities are actively involved in guiding the ACCHO in the provision of culturally-tailored programs and services.\nClinical governance concepts and elements are the same for all entities providing clinical services, with monitoring and measures taken scaled to reflect the nature, size and complexity of the practice and its services.\nThis framework draws on published guidelines from the Australian Council of Safety and Quality in Healthcare (Health Services and Primary and Community Healthcare standards) and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (Accreditation Standards 5th Edition).
