Each one of you pushed me to dig as deep as I could and kept me on the right path. I especially want to thank Virginia Dressler for being my personal hype-man and an endless stream of new sources and ideas. Without you this thesis would be a disorganized mess and my enthusiasm would have been spent. Lastly, I want to thank my parents for listening to me ramble about far-right conspiracy theories for months and months. Thank you for supporting me even when your eyes glazed over from boredom. And thank you to all the readers of this thesis. I hope it can help to inspire you to be a force for positive change in the world. \n6 \nAbstract \nThe purpose of this research is to establish the threat of far-right extremist groups in the United States and draw a link between increased violence from these groups and their strong online presence on social media. According to the research far-right groups are far more likely to commit acts of violence currently, hence why they are the focus of this research. Social media sites and content created there are responsible for creating safe havens for extremists to produce and circulate their information. This leads to higher recruitment and a normalizing of extremist ideals. By identifying the types of memes and information shared on these platforms we are more capable of dealing with the threats these groups pose. This research is also a call to action for designers working in the world of social media to be more cognizant of the spaces they create.
