There are many birth control choices to prevent pregnancy, but you and your doctor think that getting your tubes tied (bilateral tubal ligation) is a good choice for you.\nA bilateral tubal ligation (BTL) is a surgery that prevents pregnancy by blocking the fallopian tubes. Eggs cannot get through the tubes, and sperm is blocked.\nYou may be able to reverse tubal ligation with surgery, but this surgery does not always work. Because of this, it is important to have a tubal ligation only if you are sure you do not want to get pregnant in the future.\nThe Procedure and Follow Up\nTubal ligation can be done at any time. You will be given anesthesia and will be asleep during the procedure.\nThere are two ways to do this surgery, as 1) an open procedure or 2) a laparoscopic procedure. Most tubal ligations are done as laparoscopic procedures. An open procedure may be done with other surgery or if a scope cannot be used. Your doctor will decide what is best for you based on your health and any surgeries you had before.\nIn an open procedure, a large cut is made through the skin in the lower abdomen. This lets your doctor see and work without a camera.\nIn a laparoscopic procedure, several small cuts are made in the abdomen. Gas (carbon dioxide) is used to inflate the abdomen to give your doctor a better view. Your doctor will put a scope with a light and camera on the end through one of the cuts. Small tools will be placed through the other cuts to do the surgery. If there are problems that require a better look or more room, your doctor may switch to an open procedure. A change in procedure type is not a problem.\nWith both types of tubal ligations, a small section of each fallopian tube is cut free and taken out. The cut ends of tubes are sealed by clipping them or using an electricity tool to burn them. The tools will be removed. Cuts made in your skin will be closed with stitches that will dissolve on their own. Small strip bandages may also be placed. They will fall off on their own after a week or so.\nMost people go home a few hours after the procedure. If you are having your tubes tied after giving birth, the tubal ligation will not make your stay in the hospital any longer.\nThe cuts in your skin may be a bit sore or bruised for a few days. Tylenol® helps most of the time. Your shoulders and back may hurt from the gas that filled your abdomen during the scope surgery. You may feel a little dizzy, weak, tired, or sick to your stomach after the anesthesia. You might have some pain or cramping. You could have some leakage or spotting from your vagina after surgery. This should not last long.\nAfter surgery, you should not soak in the bathtub or go swimming. You can shower. Keep the cut areas clean, but do not rub them.\nAvoid a lot of lifting, heavy exercise, and having sex for a week or so.\nCall your doctor if you have a fever higher than 100, vomit, have pain in your abdomen, have heavy bleeding (soaking more than two pads in an hour), or if the healing cuts get red or swell or ooze.\nRisks and Common Problems\nThere are risks linked to this procedure, which include but are not limited to:\nAllergic reaction: All kinds of allergic reactions can happen. You could have a minor reaction such as a rash or a severe reaction such as swelling of your tongue or throat. A severe allergic reaction is a medical emergency that can cause death.\nAnesthesia problems: You could have a bad response to the anesthesia drugs you were given for the procedure.\nBleeding: You may have bleeding at the site. This may happen until the wound heals. You could also have bleeding insi","cbCaibUk0sPmzieN","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibUk0sPmzieN","docx",35502,"English","# Your Health Problem\n# The Procedure and Follow Up\n## Procedure types\n## Recovery and follow-up care\n# Risks and Common Problems","[{\"question\":\"What is bilateral tubal ligation (BTL) and how does it work?\",\"answer\":\"BTL is surgery that prevents pregnancy by blocking the fallopian tubes.
