in San Mateo County:Making Bicycling Safer in the County\n\n## ISSUE\n\nAs bicycle riding has become an ever more meaningful form of transportation, especially withthe popularization of eBikes, the demand by County residents for safe micro-mobility solutionshas soared. Are San Mateo County and its municipalities positioned to respond to safetyconcerns and meet those demands? \n## SUMMARY\n\nWhether for commuting or recreational purposes, residents in every jurisdiction of San MateoCounty(SMC),as well as from the surrounding Bay Area counties, use bicycles.Becausebicycles are widely available, for some the only mode of getting to and from work and jobs, andridden in every jurisdiction, bicycle safety has become an increasingly important issue for SMCand its cities and towns.Without greater focus on bike safety, the number of riders will remainlow, because people will avoid bicycling when they don't feel safe. The benefits of increasingbicycle riding are important to all residents of San Mateo County:reducing motor vehicles, healthy lifestyle and an inexpensive form of transportation.Accordingly,San Mateo County, andits cities and towns have a responsibility to make it safe for drivers and pedestrians,as well asbicyclists. \nDue to differences in terrain, population density, and existing infrastructure, the 20 differentmunicipalities and the unincorporated portions of the County have differing bicycle safety needsand requirements. Some cities are very hilly, making commuting to work, school,or transitstations nearly impossible.Others are more urban and accommodate many more commutingbicyclists. The County also has some areas that are primarily recreational biking destinations andareas that accommodate both commuting bicyclists and recreational bicyclists. As a result, eachcommunity also assigns a different level of importance to bicycle safety relative to other issues, such as crime, motor vehicle safety and public works improvement projects. And education andenforcement about bicycle laws varies from one jurisdiction to another. \nDespite the differences among the jurisdictions, there are several commonalities. One is thatcities and law enforcement do not consistently maintain records about bicycle near misses, accidents,or complaints;data is neither broadly available nor consistently maintained.Anothercommonality is that government entities focused on bicycling and/or improving bicycle safety donot communicate an","cbCaijELVKBJeNda","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijELVKBJeNda","pdf",10437651,130,"English","# ISSUE\n## SUMMARY\n# BACKGROUND\n## Why is
