It focuses on Catholic Social Teaching principles, especially peace, and introduces the topic of “Treasures,” helping children understand creation as God’s gift. Weekly guidance covers key learning, vocabulary, Bible references, reflection prompts, sorting activities, creative outputs and simple acts of worship.","BACKGROUND NOTES FOR PARENTS AND CARERS
About the Theme – Universal Church
Throughout their education, your child is preparing to live and work in a changing, global society. In this topic, they will be learning about global justice issues, and put their faith into action in order to build a just and fair world. Each year group will learn about a different aspect of our universal church, through scripture, prayer, stories and a range of different activities.
Through the Universal Church topics children will explore key principles of Catholic Social Teaching
Promotion of peace
When we fall out with our friends we must say sorry, try to put things right and then try to be even better friends. We must always try to live in peace and get on with everyone. This is not easy but Jesus wants us to keep on trying.
\u000f
Year 2
Year 2 children learn about ‘Treasures’ and come to understand the treasure of Creation that is God’s gift to us.
Christians believe that life is God’s gift. Appreciating that all is gift leads us to treasure everything in life.
Children will know and understand:
• What we treasure
• The world is God’s treasure given to us
Key vocabulary: treasure, gift, care, love, protect, respect, preserve creation, precious
All the resources for this topic are available from the CAFOD website \u0013 HYPERLINK "https://comeandsee.cafod.org.uk/" \u0014https://comeandsee.cafod.org.uk/\u0015
This is free to access when you register with an email address. For those unable to access the PowerPoints there are information sheets and images below. Children may also like to explore KidzZone \u0013 HYPERLINK "https://cafod.org.uk/Education/Kidz-Zone" \u0014https://cafod.org.uk/Education/Kidz-Zone\u0015
Week 1: Lesson 1 Talk about what you treasure and why. Explain what ‘treasure’ means to you. Share your own ‘treasure chest’ (e.g. photo of special people, special gift/ornament/jewellery). Walk around your house making lists of treasures around us (e.g. flowers, plants, tap for water). Discuss the things we treasure and why, and how we look after the things that are important to us. Talk about the treasures we share, the treasures of the earth – water, sun, land, trees, nature.\u000bMake a treasure box using either the chest template provided below or a decorated shoe box. Put in pictures of animals, places and people (from magazines, internet or draw your own) that represent the treasures of the world. Add any treasures you have collected from nature – shells, pebbles, flower, feather. Think about why each one is a treasure.
Lesson 2 Read The world is a treasure (see below). Read the story a second time, asking the children to close their eyes and picture the story in their mind as they listen. You might explain that this is a story or poem written a long time ago to try to explain how God made and loves the world. Go outside in to your path or garden and look around at God’s world, thinking about it as a precious treasure. Look at the sky, clouds, anything from nature.
Write a poem about the wonders of creation and all its treasures.
Week 2: Lesson 1 If possible go outside, perhaps to a park and look at God’s world as a precious treasure. Look at the sky, clouds, trees, listen for birds. Focus on a sense of awe and wonder – what makes you go ‘Wow’?. Read Psalm 19: 1-5 (see below) and key questions. Explain that because God’s world is a precious treasure we should do all we can to preserve and look after it.\u000bSort all of the statements (see below) in to yes or no piles, asking the question ‘Is this what God wants?’ If the answer is ‘yes, God wants this’ put the statement in your treasure chest and throw the statement away if the answer is ‘no, God does not want this’.
Lesson 2 Explain that we are God’s treasure. Read Luke 12:27-28 below and key questions.
Share the PowerPoint ‘We are God’s treasure’.
Create a ‘Treasures of God’s Wonderful World’ frieze. Draw different people, plants, flowers, and animals, include speech bubbles for the people to describe the ways they car","cbCain9xeI7yRH6g","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCain9xeI7yRH6g","docx",631647,13,"English","en",105,"# About the Theme -
