TRUST\n\nROGER C.MAYERJAMES H.DAVISUniversity of Notre Dame \nF.DAVID SCHOORMANPurdue University \nScholars in various disciplines have considered the causes, nature, and effects of trust.Prior approaches to studying trust are considered, including characteristics of the trustor, the trustee, and the role ofrisk.A definition of trust andamodel of its antecedents and outcomesare presented, which integrate research from multiple disciplines anddifferentiate trust from similar constructs.Several research proposi-tions based on the model are presented. \nThe topic of trust is generating increased interest in organizationalstudies.Gambetta(1988)noted that\"scholars tend to mention [trust]inpassing,to allude to it as a fundamental ingredient or lubricant,an un-avoidable dimension of social interaction, only to move on to deal withless intractable matters”(unnumbered foreword). The importance of trusthas been cited in such areas as communication(Giffin,1967),leadership(Atwater,1988),management by objectives(Scott,D.,1980),negotiation(Bazerman,1994),game theory(Milgrom &Roberts,1992),performanceappraisal (Cummings,1983),labor-management relations(Taylor,1989),and implementation of self-managed work teams(Lawler,1992). \nAlthoughagreat deal of interest in trust has been expressed by schol-ars,its study in organizations has remained problematic for several rea-sons:problems with the definition of trust itself;lack of clarity in therelationship between risk and trust;confusion between trust and its an-tecedents and outcomes;lack of specificity of trust referents leading toconfusion in levels of analysis;and a failure to consider both the trustingparty and the party to be trusted. The purpose of this article is to illumi-nate and resolve these problems in the presentation of a model of trust ofone individual for another.Through this model we propose that this levelof trust and the level of perceived risk in the situation will lead to risktaking in the relationship. \n## Need for Trust\n\nWorking together often involves interdependence, and people musttherefore depend on others in various ways to accomplish their personaland organizational goals.Several theories have emerged that describemechanisms for minimizing the risk inherent in working relationships. These theories are designed to regulate,to enforce,and/or to encouragecompliance to avoid the consequences of broken trust. In order to avoidself-serving behaviors as well as
