The program emphasizes Alaska Native languages, cultures, politics and art, and provides an in-depth perspective on traditional and contemporary Native society/ies. The AA degree emphasizes the dynamic nature of Alaska Native cultures.\nProgram Introduction\nThe Alaska Native Studies program has been in existence since 1993. In 1995 a minor was established. On average, there have been 9-14 students that have graduated with a minor in AKNS annually. The current Faculty in AKNS, Dr. Beth Leonard (Director) and Maria Williams (Professor) have been developing the Associate of Arts degree track for two purposes. First, there are a number of students that leave UAA without a degree or certificate, but have completed all the requirements of the minor. With the AA Degree in AKNS, this would provide the option for students to focus on the courses in AKNS and be able to leave UAA with an AA Degree. The greater Anchorage and Mat-Su community and the southcentral region that UAA serves have a large number of Alaska Native serving businesses, ranging from health, education, social programs, justice/legal, and arts and cultures. An AA Degree in AKNS would help educate a future workforce for this large sector of employers.\nThe AKNS program has been hosting an AKNS Undergraduate Research Symposium for the past six years. The Symposium features presentations by students enrolled in the AKNS program or students in the minor. The presentations range from Alaska Native languages, the arts, politics, history, and education and are required to include elements of research (citations, interviews, sources, etc.). AKNS also has an Internship course number, since many of the students are interns at their respective tribal or Alaska Native Corporate (profit and non-Profit) enterprises. The documents required for the Internship are in the appendices.\nThis document defines the educational objectives and expected outcomes for the AA degree in AKNS and outlines an assessment plan based on the stated objectives and outcomes.\n\u000f\nProgram Student Learning Outcomes\n• Gain elementary-level proficiency in one Alaska Native language.\n• Demonstrate a broad understanding of Alaska Native cultures, histories and contemporary politics.\n• Identify and analyze contemporary Alaska Native challenges within global Indigenous contexts.\nMeasures/Tools\nAssessment Process\nThe AKNS director and faculty will advise students through the completion of the A.A. program. Using the rubric and Exit Interview template below, as well as final papers, exams, demonstration of skills, the AKNS faculty will assess the progress the students are making throughout their coursework. Faculty will also assist the students in locating Internship opportunities, and mentor their academic and research focus for their final paper and/or presentation. Graduation from the program, completion of the internship will also be considered in the assessment of student and program success. Feedback from students will be shared with instructors and program staff, reviewed for applicability, and appropriate course and program improvements.\nRubric for Internship Paper or presentation at Undergraduate Research Symposium\n\u000f\nAKNS Associate of Arts Degree Exit Interview\nName:_________________________\tGraduation Year ___________\nEmail: _________________________\tPhone: ___________________\n1.
