Who knows why? Not me. Do you? If you need it, though, you need it. Maybe keep it short and sweet? End with a page break, not a bunch of Enter keys, to get to the real first chapter.\u000f
Set Chapter title a bit down, to fall at about a third of the way down the page.
Chapter 1
(In Word, you can set up your table of contents to use whatever style you want to pick as your second-level heading. Handy for the “headings” panel.)
Now it’s time to thrill the agent or editor with the fabulous content of your opening chapter.
Many words go here. Many many words.
“Many words???” she said.
“You are using too much punctuation,” he replied.
“That wasn’t a question, I was being sardonic,” she snapped.
“Sarcastic you mean,” he muttered sarcastically.
“Stop it with the adverbs.”
“Nothing wrong with adverbs.”
Swords flashed in the night.
Attack!
Riposte!
Retreat!
Just remember to end the chapter with a page break, so the reader will be willing to go to the next chapter. If you use a bunch of paragraph markers, they will virtually throw the manuscript against the wall in frustration.
\u000f
All of the chapters start about a third of the way down the page.
Chapter 2
Fabulous chapter 2, which has a series of scenes that you want to jump between without starting a new chapter. Center a hashtag (# sign) in an otherwise-blank line. (When published, this gets to be a simple blank line, but this way, no one will think your blank line was a typo.)
“Does this chapter have dialogue?” you ask.
“Indeed!” you reply to yourself. “Remember to punctuate it properly.”
#
Here’s scene 2. A lot of stuff happens. But then you need to jump time or location or character pov. It’s also OK to put your hashtag non-centered. It’s just easier to spot in the middle.
#
Scene 3 starts up. Repeat as needed until you get to the end of the chapter. Which ends with a Page Break!
.\u000f
Chapter 1","cbCaib81L6BRpXDZ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaib81L6BRpXDZ","docx",55605,8,"English","# Setup and placeholders
## Document formatting basics
## Typography, headers, and page numbers
# Title page and series variants
## Title page content
## Series format rules
# Table of contents and navigation
## TOC generation in Word
# Prologue and chapter structure
## Prologue guidance
## Chapter and page break rules
## Scenes and hashtag markers
# Final checklist","[{"question":"What steps should be done when setting up the template in Word?","answer":"Activate paragraph marks, delete all purple placeholder text, and remove optional elements only if they are not needed (like a table of contents or a prologue)."},{"question":"How should new chapters be separated according to the template?","answer":"Avoid starting chapters by inserting many empty lines; use page breaks instead, and end chapters with a page break so readers move smoothly to the next one."},{"question":"How can a table of contents be created, and where should it appear?","answer":"If the publisher wants it, generate it using Word’s References feature; insert space at the top before placing the “Contents” section, then rely on the heading styles for automatic entries."}]","A-Template-for-a-Novel - Novel writing template setup guide | DOCX",1788272561]
