Explains the purpose of a one-page overview, including how it helps applicants organize ideas and helps directors assess program fit and provide useful feedback. Covers what to include (brief overview, intellectual merit, broader impacts), how to connect project specifics to overarching questions and solicitation requirements, and practical dos and don’ts for concise, strategic Guide to Writing 1-pagers: \nDescription, Ideas, and Template \nLeslie Rissler (BIO) -[lrissler@nsf.gov](lrissler@nsf.gov) \nDana Denick (ENG) -[ddenick@nsf.gov](ddenick@nsf.gov) \n9/13/2023 \nTalking to Your Program Director \nOne of the most common pieces of advice is \n“Talk to your Program Director” \nThis provides an opportunity to: \n• Introduce yourself, your research program, and specific project idea • Seek guidance on the fit of your project idea within/across NSF \n• Ask questions about the submission and review process \nBest way to contact a Program Director? \n• Email a 1-pager \n2 \nWhat Is The Purpose of a 1-pager? \nA 1-pager is a Toolfor both you and the Program Director. \n• 1-pagers help YOU organize your ideas before you talk to a Program Director \n• 1-pagers help PROGRAM DIRECTORS determine fit to program for a project and prepare useful feedback \n3 \nBefore You Start \nDo your homework… \n• Peruse the NSF website ([www. nsf.gov](www. nsf.gov)) to identify the most appropriate home for your research interests \n• Read info on Directorate and Division websites to learn about the scientific priorities of specific programs \n• Read relevant solicitations (e.g., 22-603 for Mid-Career Advancement) \n• If you have never submitted to NSF, skim the intro chapter of the Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG); NSF 23-1* \n* New PAPPG (NSF 24-1) becomes effective May 20, 2024 \n4 \nWhat is a 1-pager? \nA 1-pager should mirror the format of the NSF Project Summary of an NSF proposal and include: \n• a brief overview, \n• a statement of the intellectual merit of the proposed research activity, and \n• a statement on the broader impacts of the proposed activity. \nAll NSF proposals are reviewed through use of the two National Science Board-approved merit review criteria: Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts . \nSome proposals have additional review criteria described in the funding opportunity as\"Additional Solicitation Specific Review Criteria\" . \n5 \nThe Brief Overview of a Good 1-pager Includes…Overarching Questions \nWhat is the 30,000-foot view of your project? \nFor example: \nHow do cells know when to stop dividing? \nThings you may care about that can help answer that question: \nspecial proteins called cyclins, gene regulation, epistasis, chemical signaling, DNA damage or degradation, the cell's internal clock, p53-p21-Cyclin/CDK-DREAM-CDE/CHR pathway \nTie the specifics of your system and study to a broader theoretical context, relevant to the program to which you are submitting \n6 \nThe Intellectual Merit of a Good 1- \npager Includes… \nA description of the project’s potential to advance knowledge \nInclude \n• The big picture of your research area \n• Knowledge gaps you are addressing \n• The hypotheses you will use to address this question \n• Specific aims and what you are planning to do \n• Any key preliminary data \nIf submitting to a 'special' solicitation (e.g., Mid-Career Advancement) \n• Explain why your proposed work fits the solicitation \n7 \nThe Broader Impacts of a Good 1-pager Includes: \nA description of the potential to benefit society and contribute to the achievement of specific, desired societal outcomes \nMake sure to briefly describe your Broader Impacts so that we can provide feedback on this area as well \nNeed resources? \n[https://www.researchinsociety.org/guiding-principles](https://www.researchinsociety.org/guiding-principles) \n8 \nGood 1-pagers State How Your Ideas Align With the Program and Solicitation Requirements \nTell us how your project aligns with the scope of the program or unique solicitation \nProgram Directors will help you find the right program . \nInclude how you will address any unique solicitation-specific criteria \nTo be competitive, this additional information must be addressed in your proposal, so get feedback before you apply. \nBe strategic and specific! \nUse the 1-pager to tell us what you are proposing to do. \nKeep background
