THE KOREAN ALPHABET \nSounds and First Words \nGRADES: 1-3 AUTHOR: John Hoge \nSUBJECT: Language Arts \nTIME REQUIRED: One class period \nOBJECTIVES: \nAs a result of this lesson, students will: \n1. Learn the sound for each letter of the Korean alphabet (han’gul ) . \n2. Sound out simple words and phrases written in han’gul. \nMATERIALS REQUIRED: \n• Handout of the Consonants of Han’gul \n• Vowels of Han’gul \n• Sample Korean Words in Han’gul \n• Large “flash cards” of the Korean alphabet \nBACKGROUND: \nThe Korean alphabet was developed by a team of scholars at the bidding of King Sejong in the 15th century. King Sejong wanted to bring literacy to the common people, so he asked his scholars to develop an alphabet that would be so simple that a bright person could memorize the sounds of the letters and begin reading in less than half a day. Today the Korean alphabet, called han’gul, is composed of 10 vowels and 14 consonants. The vowels and consonants may be blended to form many different sounds. \nPROCEDURE: \n1. Distribute the handout Consonants of han’gul and go over each consonant with the class. Review the list to make sure that all students have heard and reproduced the sounds of each Korean letter at least twice. \n2. Use flash cards to drill the students in matching the sound to the proper letter of the Korean alphabet. \n3. Repeat the process using the vowels. \n4. Try out the sample words in the handout. \n5. Try reading and saying the given sample phrases. \nEVALUATION: \n• Were the children able to learn the letter sounds in the Korean alphabet? \n• Were they able to sound out simple words and phrases written in han’gul? \nENRICHMENT: \n• Label items around the room in han’gul. \n• Invite a Korean speaking guest to lead simple songs and language lessons. \n• Purchase one of the many Korean language learning tapes and begin learning the language. \n[18] THE KOREAN ALPHABET THE KOREAN ALPHABET [18] \nConsonants of Hangul \n“k” or “g” as in kite or go“n” as in number \n“t” or “d” as in two or do“r” or “l” as in run or pull“m” as in map \n“p” or “b” as in pat or bit“s” as in song \n“ng” when appearing as a medial or ending letter; silent if in the initial position \n“ch” or “j” as in choose or join \n“ch” as in cheese“k” as in cross“t” as in tell“p” as in place“h” as in hat \n[19] THE KOREAN ALPHABET THE KOREAN ALPHABET [19] \nVowels of Hangul \n “ä” as in father \n “yä” as in yard \n “ô” as in son \n “yô” as in yawn \n “o” as in oak \n “yo” as in yolk \n written “u” but pronounced “oo” as in spoon \n written “yu” but pronounced “yoo” as in you \n “û” as in took \n written “i” but pronounced “e” as in beet \n[20] THE KOREAN ALPHABET THE KOREAN ALPHABET [20] \nSample Words \nKorean Pronounced \n “e” \n “ä e” \n “o e” \n “ko ge” \nEnglish \ntooth child cucumber \nmeat \n[21] THE KOREAN ALPHABET THE KOREAN ALPHABET [21] \nFlash Cards - Consonants of Han’gul (can be enlarged on a copier) \n[22] THE KOREAN ALPHABET THE KOREAN ALPHABET [22] \nFlash Cards - Consonants of Han’gul (continued) \n[23] THE KOREAN ALPHABET THE KOREAN ALPHABET [23] \nFlash Cards - Vowels of Han’gul (can be enlarged on a copier) \n[24] THE KOREAN ALPHABET THE KOREAN ALPHABET [24] \nFlash Cards - Vowels of Han’gul (continued) \n[25] THE KOREAN ALPHABET THE KOREAN ALPHABET [25]","cbCaimHdx6ruqH8e","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimHdx6ruqH8e","pdf",173931,8,"English","# Sounds and First Words\n## Objectives\n## Materials Required\n## Background\n## Procedure\n## Evaluation\n## Enrichment","[{\"question\":\"What should students be able to do by the end of the lesson?\",\"answer\":\"Students should learn the sound for each letter of the Korean alphabet and be able to sound out simple words and phrases written in han’gul.\"},{\"question\":\"What materials are required for this lesson?\",\"answer\":\"The lesson uses handouts for consonants and vowels of han’gul, a handout of sample Korean words, and large flash cards of the Korean alphabet.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the lesson proceed during class?\",\"answer\":\"Students review consonants, drill sound-to-letter matching with flash cards, repeat the process for vowels, practice sample words, and then read and say the provided sample phrases.\"}]","3% The Korean Alphabet - Lesson Plan - Sounds and First Words | PDF"]
