This SOP must be accompanied by hands-on training or demonstration.\nLab/Shop Contact Information\t.\nHAZARD OVERVIEW\nHydrofluoric acid (HF) solutions are extremely corrosive and toxic. HF is a lipid-soluble, weak acid that penetrates tissue more rapidly than typical mineral acids. HF also attacks glass, glazes, enamels, pottery, concrete, rubber, leather, many metals, and most organic compounds. Upon HF reaction with metals, explosive hydrogen gas may be formed.\nHF exposures can be fatal or cause permanent bone, tissue, and nerve damage. The severity of chemical burns depends on the type and concentration of the chemical, the body parts contacted, and the duration of exposure. Direct exposure to corrosives may cause ocular damage resulting in blindness and/or skin burns within seconds of exposure. Corrosive vapors, dust from solids, or aerosolized/evaporated liquids can be inhaled and cause serious damage to mucous membranes and the airways. Airborne HF exposures above 50 ppm can be fatal. HF irreversibly binds calcium and magnesium which affects nerve signaling and critical tissue functions. Nerve damage by HF may prevent feelings of pain or burning until hours after the exposure occurred. Do not rely on pain as a sign of exposure. Alternatively, concentrated HF (over 50%) can cause severe throbbing pain. HF burns around the fingernails are extremely painful, difficult to treat, and may require surgical removal of the nail. Cardiac arrest can be caused by contact with concentrated HF to a small portion of your body such as the palm of your hand. Exposure to low concentration HF can circulate in the body and remove calcium from bone. The latency period for symptoms to appear after exposure to 20-50% HF solutions may be up to 8 hours. Solutions less than 20% may not produce symptoms for up to 24 hours.\nAny suspected HF exposure requires urgent medical attention. Cures and treatments may not be available to save an exposed person from permanent or lethal reactions to acute toxins like HF.\n(highlighted instructions may be deleted) If the material is a Gas or is intentionally vaporized/aerosolized, the material should be handled according to Acutely Toxic Gas SOP.
