Forms are sent by mail at the end of January, and members can also view their forms in the secure section of our website—normally by February 1. \nThis brochure answers common questions members may have about 1099 forms. \nQ1: What is a 1099-R? \nA1: Form 1099-R (commonly known as a 1099 form) is a tax form that reports distributions made from a pension plan or other retirement account to an individual during a calendar year. TRS sends a copy of this form to the individual and reports the information to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) . \nQ2: When will I receive my 1099 forms fora given year? \nA2: All 1099 forms for a given tax year are sent by the following January 31. TRS announces on our website and social media when 1099 forms are mailed. \nYou’ll also find 1099 forms posted in the secure section [of our website at www.trsnyc.org](of our website at www.trsnyc.org) 􀀗 Documents 􀀗 1099 Forms. Forms for a given year are normally available for viewing by the following February 1. TRS notifies members by email when their 1099 forms are available for online viewing. \nQ3: What 1099 forms can I view online? \nA3: In general, 1099 forms for the last five tax years are available for members to view in the secure section of our website. However, 1099 forms for monthly retirement benefits prior to 2021 are not available online. \nQ4: What distributions are reported on a 1099-R form? \nA4: TRS issues a separate 1099-R form for each of the \nfollowing types of distributions: \n• Advance payments and retirement allowance payments from the Qualified Pension Plan (QPP) \n• Annuity payments from the Tax-Deferred Annuity (TDA) Program \n• TDA Direct Withdrawals and Direct Rollovers \n• TDA Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) \n• Death benefit payments \n• Defaulted loans and taxable loans taken at retirement \n• Withdrawals of funds upon separation from service \n• Refunds of erroneous contributions \n• Taxable excess withdrawals, including those taken at retirement \n• Lump-sum disability payments \nQ5: Where are the taxable and tax-free amounts listed on my 1099-R form? A5: The taxable amount is listed in box \\#2a; the tax-free amount is listed in box \\#5 . \nQ6: What does it mean if a “0” is shown asthe taxable amount in box \\#2a? \nA6: A “0” in box \\#2a indicates a Direct Rollover in which you received no funds directly. \nQ7: Why would “Taxable amount not determined” be checked in box \\#2b? \nA7: Generally, TRS is able to calculate the taxable portion of your gross distribution (i.e., the amount in box \\#1), and that amount is reflected in box \\#2a. However,“Taxable amount not determined” in box \n\\#2b is checked when all the information required to calculate the taxable amount is not available. In that case, you may wish to consult with your tax advisor to determine the taxable portion of the distribution. In addition, if you are a retiree, your Benefits Letter may help you calculate this amount. \nQ8: What is the distribution code used on the 1099-R form? \nA8: The distribution code in box \\#7 indicates the typeof distribution you received. Below is a list of the distribution codes used on the 1099-R form: \n1 “Early” distribution to a member who is underage 59½ with no known exceptions, as defined by the IRS. \n2 “Early” distribution to a member who is under \nage 59½, but qualified for an exception (e.g., separated from service after the age of 55), as defined by the IRS. \n3 Distributions to a member on an accident and/ or ordinary disability retirement; distributions include retirement allowance payments, outstanding QPP or TDA loans at retirement, and total TDA withdrawals. \n4 Death benefit distribution based on the death of a retired member. \n4a Death benefit distribution if the beneficiary qualifies for a 5-year or 10-year tax option. \n(If you are a beneficiary of a member who was born before 1936, y","cbCaiaAxcvSqkeNO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaAxcvSqkeNO","pdf",419454,"English","# 1099 Forms Overview\n## What is a 1099-R?\n## When will I receive my 1099 forms?\n## What 1099 forms can I view online?\n## What distributions are reported on a 1099-R?\n## How to find taxable and tax-free amounts\n## Meaning of “0” in box 2a\n## Why “Taxable amount not determined” may be checked\n## Distribution codes in box 7\n## Taxable year for checks dated for the prior year\n## Advance payments and 1099-R","[{\"question\":\"What is a 1099-R form used for?\",\"answer\":\"Form 1099-R reports distributions made from a pension plan or other retirement account to an individual during a calendar year.
