In the Ancient Rome, science was fruit of the technical popular knowledges in addition to the knowledges which came from the conctacs with another peoples (diplomatics, commercial relationships, direct contact because of proximity or conquest...) .  \nDivergent knowledges can be extracted from ancient science, but they are always mixed with mythological, philosophal elements which tried to bring along a meaning for everything that surrrounds us. Medicine is one of these knowlegdes. It can be said that Western medicine has passed through mystic Egiptian 'doctors', physicist Greeks and technical, hellenophile Roman 'doctors' . The introduction of Greek medicine in Rome was not such immediate, but it took its time due to conservative ideas around a part of its society. Greece's cultural prestige, Rome's expansion and the wish of profits were the most important factors to let Greek medicine in. Once into the borders, the new Roman medicine passed through different stages: Methodic school, Pneumatic school, Eclectic school, Galenic medicine and Postgalenic medicine.  \nMedicine itself was also divided in different branches, such as Dietetics, Pharmacology, Surgery and Hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy comes from the union of water, medicine and hygiene. Its healing effects were well-known by some authors, such as Asclepiades of Bithynia and the encyclopedists Celsus (De Medicina) and Pliny the Elder (Naturalis Historia) . Water's therapeutic properties vary according to its temperature (hot water causes superficial vasodilatation and cold water causes vasoconstriction), its kind of application (baths, wrappings, washings, streams, intakes...), and its kind of water (saltwater, mineral water, spring water) .  \nVitruvius taught us about finding out the best waters, both for consumption and for external treatments. In his work De Architectura, he explained that the best ones come from springs located in mountainous terrains which are oriented towards north and not directly exposed to the sunlight, unless the course of the water passes through zones high in sulphur, heavy metals, bitumen...  \nThermae were one of the most important Roman buildings. Hydrotherapy becamestablished in them and spread all over the Empire. The habit to take a bath and healthy steam  \nsaunas culminated in the creation of huge hot spring resorts, such as Aquae Sulis in current England. Every resident, free or not, did physical exercise, took baths and cured his health ailments in them, as the medic guidelines of that time showed.  \nThalassotherapy was also an interesting, curious part of hydrotherapy. We have learnt with Plinius that sea water have many healing properties. It can be used hot and cold, according to the purposes for which we wanted to make use of it.
