Among these ceremonies is Likumbi Lya Mize of the Luvale speaking people. The other is the Umutomboko traditional ceremony of the lunda people in luapula province. We also have the Kulamba traditional ceremony ofthe Chewa-speaking people in Eastern Province and Malaila traditional ceremony of the Kunda speaking people in the Luangwa Valley. \nThe Likumbi Lya Mize includes Kuvumbuka, the reserrection of the Makishi, which comprises of Makishi dances. There is usually a colourful procession on a traditional hammock escorted by the royal guards, retainers and praise singers. This ceremony provides an opportunity for many to see the colourful Makishi dancers. The Makishi come from a tradition of boys' initiation in which moral lessons are imparted and practical life lessons to young boys between eight and twelve are given. The event usually takes place on both sides of the Zambezi.Masked dances and theatrical performancetake place throughout the days and the meanings of the masks are shared with onlookers. On the other hand,Kulamba is a Chewa traditional ceremony. The Chiefs pay homage to their King,Kalonga Gawa Undi during this ceremony. Kulamba ceremony unites the Chewa. During this ceremony, the Chewa from Malawi,Mozambique, and Zambia demonstrate their unity under their King,Kalonga Gawa Undi. \nDuring the Kulamba ceremony, there is a re-creation of the travels that the Chewa made from the Congo.Kalonga Gawa Undi leads the procession. The journey starts from the Gwalada where the King would have been in seclusion, thinking and praying for his people. It ends at the arena Dzimbabwe, where the people are normally gathered. During the procession,Kalonga Gawa Undi is escorted by his soldiers, the ambiri. He is usually met by mbumba, the women,on his way and they escort him home where his mother Nyangu, the Queen Mother awaits. After greeting his \nmother,Kalonga ascends his throne in the Kasusu-the Royal rotunda. All the chiefs sit at the foot of the Kasusu as a show of their respect and admiration. Chiefs from each country inform the King about the situation in the chiefdoms. This is followed by the presentatio of gifts and performance of traditional dances. We should all be proud of our culture. \nComprehension questions \n1.
