\nThe.Magazine of Catholic Family Living35c \n# You’ve Got to Be Taught\n\nNo MAN is born a bigot. But he may be born inthe midst of bigotry. At this season of peace, celebrating Jesus Christ's birth, let's not forgetthat he was born in a land torn by tribal dis-sension and racial hatred—the Judaeans distrustedthe Galileans, and the Jews held the Samaritans \nin cold contempt, although the latter rightfully claimed commondescent from their father Abraham. \nAn innocent child is a sign of the universal brotherhood of man:bias, nationality, color mean nothing to the child.Engraved deep inhis nature is the law of his Maker,God the Father of all.And thislaw antedates State and Federal laws;this law ruled men's hearts longbefore Roman Catholic or Baptist or Presbyterian or atheist or com-munist \"persuasion\"ever influenced personal judgments. \nThis is the law that Christ invoked when he was asked by a lawyer,\"What must I do to be perfect?\"Our Lord's answer:\"Love Godabove all and love your neighbor as yourself.\"And the lawyer inself-defense,since every Jew should have known this answer,asked,\"But who is my neighbor?\" \nAnd Jesus's answer—the parable of the Good Samaritan—cutthrough racial differences and prejudices. He chose as a model of per-fection a hated Samaritan who goes out of his way to give lovingservice, money, and future security to a Jew in need, who under anycircumstances was his lifelong enemy.A modern parallel would be:if the white Christians of Anytown,U.S.A.,were to ask the same ques-tion of God today,he would answer,\"James Meredith is your neigh-bor,\"because he was willing to face mistreatment and possible death, that others may some day live a fuller life with equal rights of citizen-ship. \nThis modern parable was preached with a dramatic difference in alittle town north of the Ohio River, here in Indiana,at the time ofthe Mississippi riots.A public highschool professor harangued his \nclass about the goings on in the South and finally fired the question:\"And how many nigger-lovers are there in this class?\"During anexplosive silence, one lad looked around, smiled grimly at his class-mates,and with determination slowly raised his hand. One by one, other hands went up.When the professor challenged the students’stand, the first lad stood up and answered,\"James Merdith has asmuch right to an education in a State school as anyone in this class-room.”The students were sophomores, and the professor is hiredwith public funds to teach tax-payers'children. \nAnd that reminds me of a short song in South Pacific that teachesa lesson it takes a lifetime to learn. Here's how it goes:\"You've gotto be taught to hate and fear,You’ve got to be taught to be afraid,Ofpeople whose skin is a different shade. You've got to be taught beforeit's too late,Before you are six or seven or eight,To hate all thepeople your relatives hate. You’ve got to be carefully taught.”Some-how that song never became a \"hit.\" \nDuring the riots in Mississippi,at least one father sensed his ownguilt in having contributed to a tradition of bigotry;he said in a publicTV statement:\"We adult leaders have failed our children. We haveallowed them to be incited to the point where they themselves havecaused violence. It's high time we obey the laws if we expect them to.” \nAnd especially the law that contains all other laws in itself:\"Lovethy neighbor as thyself.”And to help interpret this most ancient oflaws in modern terms,we give you in this issue Lillian Smith’s \"StrangeKind of Love.\"When we asked her permission to reprint it,shewrote:\"I'm glad you like it.It is,as Rilke said of such things,'theheart's work.'I've been wanting to say this for a long time.\"And sohave we,the editors of MARRIAGE Magazine. \n _a_ \nChan \nFortunately,there is another inter-pretation.Some men have heard thevirtues of work preached for so longthat they have come to believe workis the only meaningful activity intheir lives. They use free time chieflyte rest up so they can go back towork recharged.Sunday,","cbCaigMGWvq7K5or","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigMGWvq7K5or","pdf",3168923,68,"English","# You’ve Got to Be Taught\n# WHOLLY
