\nJour Onlg Child Uhois ifted or Your Onlyifted Child AmongSiblings:lavigating the \nllaters of Differences \nBy Kathi Lundstrom,Ph.D. \narenting a gifted child can be challenging, but also the most wonderfully rewardingexperience of a parent's life.Bright kids offernew perspectives to parents as they navigatethe world through their own special lens.Theirinsatiable desire to learn, their intense focus onspecific passions, and the sense of social justicefound in many gifted children and youth canleave a parent breathless with trying to keep up. \n# When Your Gifted Child is an“Only”\n\nFor a gifted child without siblings, the onus tends to fall on theparents to keep their child motivated, entertained, and challenged, while earning a living, paying the bills, and maintaining somesense of order. \nAccording to research, only children tend to be ambitious,well-adjusted,independent,have strong character, and are intel-ligent.2 When we layer these characteristics with giftedness, wesee some similarities.Kids with intellectual giftedness tend to beambitious and driven, particularly in an area of their passion.Theyare often very drawn to social justice issues, and can have a keensense of right, wrong, and fairness.Other types of giftedness suchas extreme musical, artistic,or athletic talent show unrelentingdrive in their area of ability, the very picture of ambition.³ \nAn only child who is gifted needs many things:a parent whoplays with them, creates plenty of social contact with like-abilitychildren,provides challenges and new experiences, and is notafraid of or exasperated by answering the constant “whys.”\"It isimportant that parents of only children who are gifted seek outgroups where their child can explore, fourish, and meet others, such as sports, music lessons, local community center classes, group hobbies,or enrichment camps. \nThere are low-cost and free options in many communities forchallenging gifted kids, and simply taking your child on naturewalks and googling interesting plants, animals,or even rocks, make for wonderful family learning time. The local public librarymay have suggestions,as well.As your child reaches middle andhigh school there may be opportunities to shadow or volunteer ina nearby business,non-profit,house of worship,or other organi-zation.This provides a way for your teen to learn new things in adifferent environment, practicing their independence. \nTime with extended family is also important if your familylives nearby.Unconditional love and family fun helps get giftedkids out of their own head and involved with others.Make sureyou don’t compare your child's intellect or talent to other childrenin your extended family.Differences of any kind are obviousenough without pointing them out.Your only child needs theircousins,if they live nearby, who can become surrogate siblingsand life-long confidants. \n# Tips for Parents of Gifted Only Children\n\n·Encourage interaction with other children, beginning at 18months.As your child grows, seek out children with similarabilities and interests. \n·Encourage laughter.Gifted only children tend to bescholarly and logical, which is great, but also indulge insilliness and humor.5 \n·Resist the urge to rescue your child.Allow your child tofind their own solutions, unless,of course, there is a threat ofphysical harm. \n·Don’t ask for or expect perfection.Your child is flawed, justlike you.Allow your child to learn through mistakes, whichbuilds character. \n·You are not your child's friend,so don't confide adult infor-mation with a child.Be a parent and foster your own adultfriendships and relationships. \n# When One Child is ldentified as Gifted andAnother is Not\n\nSo,what if you have a child who is identified as gifted andanother who is not?Research shows that within a family group, the offspring tend to be within 5-10IQpoints from one another.6Therefore,it is likely that where there is one gifted child, theretend to be others. That does not mean that all have been identifiedgifted.Perhaps your child","cbCaisXXrIfPfieb","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisXXrIfPfieb","pdf",3171161,"English","# When Your Gifted Child is an
