It outlines the background of the Standards, their goal of quality and consistency across EMS programs, and how they support entry-level licensure requirements. It details improvements such as increased program flexibility, expanded creativity in module design, alternative delivery methods, and better adaptability to medical knowledge, with CPR bleeding control as an example. It also lists updated provider levels, assessment terminology, and a structured chapter framework covering preparatory topics, airway and CPR, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma, special populations, and EMS operations.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/healthcare/","Healthcare",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/your-first-response-in-emergency-care-fifth-edition-national-ems-education-standards-sample-chapter/362648/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/your-first-response-in-emergency-care-fifth-edition-national-ems-education-standards-sample-chapter/362648.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Mabel","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-24","2026-09-23",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",8,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What purpose do the National EMS Education Standards serve for EMS educators and publishers?","Question",{"text":63,"@type":64},"They guide the design of EMS programs and support publishers in developing new instructional materials. Pollak, MD, FAAOS \nMeets the New \nNational EMS Education Standards \nThe Future of EMS Education Has Arrived! \nDear Educator, \nAs you know, the new National EMS Education Standards were approved last year by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These Standards are part of a larger effort, based on the National EMS Education Agenda for the Future, published in 2000 at the request of National Association of State EMS Officials. The Agenda was a consensus vision of the future of EMS. It intended to promote quality and consistency among all EMS education programs and establish common entry-level requirements for the licensure of various levels of EMS providers throughout the country. \nThe National EMS Education Standards document is being used by publishers to develop new instructional materials and should guide EMS educators in designing their programs and in making decisions about the materials to use in their classrooms. \nYou may have noticed that the Standards are less prescriptive than the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) National Standard Curricula that they replace. Instead of specific cognitive, affective, and psychomotor objectives, the National EMS Education Standards identify the depth and breadth of content and provide minimal terminal objectives for each EMS provider level. Ultimately, the new National EMS Education Standards allow for: \nIncreased program flexibility—Educators can now choose \nto make certain modules in the Standards a prerequisite to \ntheir courses, and they may teach the material in whatever \norder and fashion they choose. \nGreater creativity in program and material design— \nEducators have the freedom to be more creative about \nhow they cover content—for example, allowing students \nto follow a course of independent study for a particular \nmodule, rather than having the instructor lecture directly \nout of the training materials. \nBetter alternative delivery methods—Alternative delivery \nmethods will allow many options—from independent study \nto online learning resources. \nIncreased ability to respond to changes in medical \nknowledge—Educators will have a greater ability to adapt \ntheir presentations to the latest medical information. \nBleeding control and the emphasis on compressions \ninstead of ventilations during CPR are excellent examples \nof where the National Standard Curricula was less nimble \nthan the new National EMS Education Standards. As new \nbreakthroughs in medicine occur, this knowledge can easily \nbe incorporated into the classroom. \nMany educators are trying to sort out what’s really new in the National EMS Education Standards. First, the official names of the provider levels have changed: \nEmergency Medical Responder or EMR— \nformerly First Responder \nEmergency Medical Technician or EMT— \nno longer referred to as “Basic” \nAdvanced Emergency Medical Technician or AEMT—replaces EMT-Intermediate. \nParamedic \nNew patient assessment terminology is being introduced, although many educators will recognize the terms primary and secondary assessment. Some skills have been added or changed, and there is expanded cognitive material at every level, such as public health, life span development, pathophysiology, communication, medical terminology, and patients with special challenges. \n| Fifth Edition | National EMS Education Standards | |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| Section 1.
