\nLife of J.B.Priestley \nJohn Boynton Priestley was born on 13 September 1894 in Bradford. He died nearly ninety years later on 14 August 1984 in Stratford-upon-Avon. \nThe son of a schoolmaster,he left school at sixteen and drifted intoa job with a local wool merchant. He stayed in Bradford until theoutbreak of World War I,eventually finding work on various localpapers. He always remembered with great affection the Bradford ofhis youth with its closely knit society and its theatres.During the warhe served in France(with a Yorkshire regiment, the 10th Duke ofWellington's),but he never made much of this experience in hiswritings, even though he was invalided home after being buried alivein the trenches. In 1919 he went to Trinity Hall,Cambridge,on an ex-serviceman's grant, and read Modern History and Political Science. He never really felt at home in Cambridge. He married an oldBradford girl-friend,Pat Tempest,in June 1921,and was determinedto leave academic life as soon as possible. The offer of a job asUniversity Extension Lecturer in North Devon did not appeal, sothey moved to London where Priestley very soon began to make aliving as a free-lance writer for newspapers and as a reader for BodleyHead, the publishers. The Priestleys'early married life was bohe-mian and relatively insecure until Priestley began to make a reputa-tion for himself in the field of literary journalism, finally establishinghimself after the publication of a much admired article on ThomasLove Peacock(1923)in The Times Literary Supplement. He alsopublished a minor classic,The English Comic Characters,in 1925,thesame year that his young wife died of cancer.Writing helped todistract him from his wife's prolonged illness;but he was also havingand affair with Jane Wyndham Lewis and married her in 1926 afterher divorce. The resultant family was a complicated one:there werePat's children Barbara and Silvia,Jane's daughter from her firstmarriage Angela, and her baby daughter Mary who was actuallyPriestley's child, born while Pat was still alive.Priestley's secondmarriage was to last for twenty-six years, and although it began as apassionate love affair, the relationship was to be a tormented one, inpart because of Priestley's affairs with other women. \n# 6·Introduction\n\nBy 1927 his wri","cbCaigZ05nIk4NgX","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigZ05nIk4NgX","pdf",4167759,"English","#
