A hunter lives nearby with very bad dogs, and after YEXUE swallows one dog, the hunter responds with a chant that praises his “guardian” dog and calls for his return. YEXUE then answers with his own song, inviting the hunter to come closer and threatening that anyone who approaches may be swallowed as well.","YEXUE \nThe History of the Apparition of Vodun \nAs told by Madame Vlafonou Photos and Illustrations by Judith Vlafonou and Anie Gandoto Semassoussi Fon, English \nTo: \nmy late husband Simon Vlafonou and to my grandchildren \nYEXUE \nThe History of the Apparition of Vodun \nAs told by Mémé VLAFONOU Illustrations by Anie Gandoto Semassoussi and Judith Vlafonou Photos by Judith Vlafonou \nFunding provided by Three Sisters : Trois Soeurs L3C and Veterans for Peace Chapter 93 \nFon, English \nBenin \nCopyright © 2017, Three Sisters : Trois Soeurs L3C \nFor permission to reuse, contact the copyright holder. \nFon-French translations by Sandrine Chikou French-English translations by Marcy O'Neil \nSandrine Chikou, TS Education Fund \nIn Africa the tale, like orality, is the greatest means of education and instruction of the child. During the evenings when the moon was bright, the children gathered around their grandparents to listen to tales. This gathering had several meanings. This allowed the children to come together, to learn the meaning of cohabitation. It created in the children the stability which awakens in them the sense of family spirit. The conclusions, the lessons learned at the end of each tale, were intended to educate children, to open their minds so that they know the difference between goodness and wickedness in order to opt for good and avoid evil. \nxue nu xo tʃe z mɔ̆ viɲ boyi zɔ̆ gbetɔ ɖokpoji kpo tʃuku tɔ̆ kpo. \nThere was once an animal called YEXUE.
