My name is Mr Laher and I am the Assistant Principal responsible for Key Stage 3 progress at The Valley Leadership Academy. \nDuring the last 12 months our departments have been working extremely hard to implement the KS3 STAR curriculum. There is some information regarding the KS3 curriculum on our website, please be aware however, that we are constantly reviewing the curriculum and that it may change slightly each term. \nAs well as reflecting on our content, we will also be refining some changes to assessments and how we report students’ progress to you. \nAttached is a summary of information around assessments from each subject. Please refer to it alongside the information below. Do please take the time to read through this and discuss with your child how they prepare for their assessments. Feel free to contact me with any questions; my email address can be found at the end of this letter. \nAssessment will happen on a regular basis in lessons, for example a quick quiz to check learning which could be set as either a homework task on Microsoft Teams or in a lesson as a starter. These will be very short and appropriate to the topic in hand or revisiting previous knowledge. \nFor Year 7 the rank order process will be at the end of this half term and then at the end of each term. These will be marked in percentages. You will receive information on the percentage in each assessment and how this compares to where they came into the Academy. These assessments will measure overall performance, understanding, knowledge and retention. \nReports will focus specifically on the amount of knowledge your child has mastered and where they will receive extra-support. We will be running study hall for students that need to catch up. \nCAT4 Tests \nAt the start of the year all students in Year 7 sit CAT4 tests. This will be the week of 13 September. These tests identify strengths and provide some feedback with suggestions on how students can develop their skills. \nWe would usually use the SATs scores as a baseline (starting point) for students but as this information is not available, we will use results from these CAT4 tests together with the results of any initial baseline test. There is no preparation needed for this assessment just that students try their best. Further information can be found on Information for parents-GL Assessment ([gl-assessment.co.uk](gl-assessment.co.uk)) (click the link) \nReading \nSomething we are very passionate about is that all students should be reading on a regular basis. It is an essential life skill. There is also evidence that students who do not read on a regular basis suffer when it comes to accessing the more complicated language in exams. \nWe all know that reading is a crucial part of learning. It is also highly enjoyable! There have been many educational studies published which show that reading can make a large difference to academic achievement. Evidence suggests that children who read every day develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. Reading both fiction and non-fiction is very important. Reading non-fiction will help students to increase their subject specific vocabulary and enable them to access their studies at a higher level. This is why we want to encourage students to read and support them to have regular access to high quality works of fiction and non-fiction \nTo accurately assess where your child’s reading ability, all students in Years 7 to 9 will undergo a brief online reading assessment. \nWe are delighted that to develop all students reading we will shortly be opening our brand-new library. Alongside new books the library will also include we also acquired a full set of laptops and kindles for loan. \nTo highlight the importance of reading further all Y","cbCaiucySgzvtIet","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiucySgzvtIet","pdf",312078,"English","# Year 7 Assessment - Half Term 1\n## Curriculum and assessment approach\n## CAT4 Tests\n## Reading and online reading assessment\n## Homework and study support\n## Subject assessment topics and dates","[{\"question\":\"What assessment activities will Year 7 students experience during Half Term 1?\",\"answer\":\"Assessments will take place regularly in lessons, such as short quizzes to check learning, and there will also be a rank order process at the end of the half term marked in percentages.\"},{\"question\":\"Do Year 7 students need to prepare for the CAT4 tests?\",\"answer\":\"No preparation is needed for the CAT4 assessment; students should simply try their best.
