They also provide information on the nature of the assessments and offer suggestions on extra resources which can be used to support learning.  \nIt is important to emphasise that these plans are working documents and departments actively use them as a guide to plan the teaching and assessments throughout the year. However, departments are also flexible enough to respond to the needs of the learners.  \nAt Halliford School we are academically ambitious for our students as well as being sensitive to their needs. In order to achieve this, we teach GCSE students in the following groups:  \n1. Maths  \nIn Year 11 we teach Mathematics in four sets, each set by ability in mathematics. These are 11F, 11A, 11B, 11Cand 11D.  \n11F students are very able at Mathematics and have completed their IGCSE in Mathematics at the end of Year  \n10. They will take the AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics Qualification at the end of Year 11.  \nSets 11A, 11B, 11C and 11D will complete the IGCSE Mathematics course over two years, sitting their examination at the end of Year 11.  \nThe more able groups are often larger, allowing for greater support in the lower sets. Places in sets are determined by a series of assessments throughout Year 10 initially, and there are opportunities for movement between the sets. Science  \nIn Year 11 we teach Science in four sets, each set by ability across all three scientific disciplines (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) . The more able groups are often larger, allowing for greater support in the lower sets. By this stage, students will have decided which programme of study they are following; separate Science or combined science Trilogy.  \nFollowing these discussions, students will be placed in the sets which suit their course choice and ability. Currently, we have 2 sets studying Separate Sciences and 2 sets studying combined Science Trilogy.  \n3. Modern Foreign Languages  \nIn Year 11, students will have chosen to study at least one language; their ‘core’ language. Depending on the language and the number of students opting for it, we may have either 1, 2 or 3 sets per language. Where thereis one set, it is mixed ability and where there are several sets, they are setted by ability. If students wish to continue to study two languages, they will have French as their option choice and their other language in the core section of the timetable.  \nYear 11 Curriculum  \n4. English  \nIn Year 11, students are taught in four groups, three higher mixed ability groups and one support group.
