Maribyrnong College is committed to providing relevant, stimulating and appropriate learning pathways for all students. \nWe want our students, whatever their learning styles, abilities and interests, to be active, life-long learners. We believe that all students have the ability to achieve success and develop the necessary skills and knowledge which will enable them to maximise opportunities in anever-changing workforce. \nIn Year 10 the focus is on developing pathways. Students are now required to make deeper connections between their learning and the world around them and how learning might be applied. \nThe Year 10 course structure enables subject selection based primarily on interest and ability rather than a prescriptive curriculum, as well as enabling advanced access to a range of VCE studies to extend high performing students. We work with MSA students to ensure that their course selection provides the flexibility needed to successfully balance training and sporting commitments alongside academic studies. \nThis publication is designed to assist students and their parents/carers in making choices that will ultimately shape future pathways. We encourage you to consider the information in this handbook and to seek the expert assistance of our staff throughout the process. \nYEAR 10 CURRICULUM STRUCTURE \nAt Year 10 all subjects are allocated five periods per week which are aligned with the VCE timetable. This allows students greater access to a range of VCE subjects, as well as the flexibility to pursue interests and talents in greater depth. Subjects are delivered as semester long units and students complete a total of 12 units for the year, six units in Semester 1 and six units in Semester 2. \nAll Year 10 Programs \nAll students undertake a full year (two units) of English: \n• English (two units) \n• English & Literature (two units) \n• EAL (two units) \nStudents must also undertake a full year (two units) of Mathematics: \n• Applied Mathematics (two units) \n• Pre-General Mathematics (two units) \n• Pre-Methods Mathematics (two units) \nEnglish and Mathematics will therefore make up four units out of the possible 12. The remaining 8 semester units are chosen from a range of elective units and may include a VCE subject (two units) which runs for the whole year. \nVCE Acceleration \nStudents can apply to study a VCE subject in Year 10. Students who are successful with their application must undertake that VCE study for the whole year, that is, complete Units 1+2 . Choosing a VCE subject allows increased flexibility in meeting the requirements of the VCE as well as an opportunity to gradually adjust to the demands of VCE during Year 10. Undertaking VCE units can provide high performing Year 10 students with a satisfying challenge. \nVCE units will be offered to students who have demonstrated a commitment to their studies and have the ability to meet the demands of the chosen VCE subject. Selection of one of these subjects does not guarantee entry. Final approval is given after the Semester 2 exams and will also depend on availability. \nStudents will be required to complete an expression of interest and undertake an aptitude test. Progress and semester reports along with recommendations from teachers and Year Level Coordinators will also be used to determine a student’s suitability. Please note students will only be permitted to accelerate in one VCE subject. \nThe following subjects are NOT offered for acceleration: Physics, Chemistry, Maths Methods, Specialist Maths, all English subjects. \nSelection Criteria for VCE Acceleration \nThe following criteria are used to select applicants: \n1.
