hundred womenI representing Catholic countries of the world responded to the roll callstudy week in May of this year.Delegates met to consider pressing businessof the World Union and to study for four days the Christian personalityof woman.Three workshops considered woman's personality in view ofher spiritual life, her family life, her social and apostolic life.We wereconcerned with the situation in which woman finds herself today—a situa-tion that is endangering her human and Christian personality. This wasably pointed out by Canon Lamoot, the general chaplain of the World Union, who quoted the Holy Father's letter of July 1952 to the German Federationof Catholic Women in which His Holiness said that fifty years ago it wasnecessary to introduce the Catholic woman into careers and public posi-tions to which circumstances were calling her and which she could nolonger refuse.Today,he said, women have been accepted, and their re-sponsibility is now to uphold their dignity as women and as ChristiansThey must hold to the true doctrines of the Church and keep abreast of theChurch's teaching in all fields of activity. To avoid present-day dangers, they must have a living and supernatural faith, which is only maintainedby prayer and active meditation. \nThroughout the study days,Mary, the model of women for all times, was shown as the exemplification of the true personality on which Catholicwomen should pattern. Each woman at Fatima,I am sure, experienceda close personal feeling toward Our Lady who,as late as 1917,appearedat the very place where we were privileged to meet. \nThe study days were richly rewarding. They brought us very closeto representatives of other countries, our Catholic sisters. They made usconscious of our duty as Catholic women to bring to the members of ouraffiliated organizations a realization of our great privileges and the graveresponsibilities which accompany these privileges. These days gave us \nan increased awareness of the unity which is ours through the World Unionof Catholic Women's Organizations. \nThe World Union was established in 1910 by St.Pius X.Delegatesfrom eleven countries formed the first council, which met each year up toWorld War I,in Madrid,Vienna and London.During the first WorldWar the meetings were discontinued, but were resumed in 1922.Theywere interrupted again in 1940 by World War II,but contacts wereresumed immediately after the war. Now,in 1954,the World Union hasa membership of 36 million women in Africa,Asia,North America—whichincludes Canada, the United States and Mexico—Central America,SouthAmerica,Australia, and Europe. The Union operates directly under theguidance of the Holy See and is governed by constitution and by-laws estab-lished by the members of the affiliated groups. Its aims are similar to ourown national aims, but extended internationally. It is a bond and a centerof exchange between Catholic women's organizations of the world.Itpromotes and coordinates the contribution of Catholic women in interna-tional life.It serves further to represent the Catholic women of the worldat official international meetings. In summary,it is to give the woman’sapostolate the means of world-wide penetration. \nYou were remembered particularly during the days at Fatima on ourfrequent visits to the Apparition Chapel. However,if upon returninghome,we are not able to inspire you to greater effort in the cause of peaceand the Christianization of the world, our trip was of no avail. We areblessed with a great gift in this country, the structure of the National Coun-cil of Catholic Women, given us by our bishops. Our responsibility isuniversal. We must work not only for ourselves, our families or our com-munity,even our state or nation, but must extend ourselves to embrace thewhole world.Let us follow the activities of the World U","cbCaitSsgOTg0oGk","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitSsgOTg0oGk","pdf",388176,"English","# WUCWO Study Week\n## Honors\n## THE D.C.C.W.
