Overall, I spent over four decades with SIL serving in Northern Australia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. In these places I helped groups of people develop literacy materials in their local languages. In the process I learned how to help others write good texts. She is not just a fantastic book author and illustrator, but she is also a great editor and graphic designer.  \nI am happy for people to translate this book into other languages but not to significantly change the ideas and concepts presented.  \nWriting good books  \nby Glenys Waters  \nEnglish  \nWhy write this book?  \nI am very thankful that I began my teaching career in schools that were full of great books containing great stories and amazing illustrations. I followed the works of my favourite children's authors and shared them with eager readers.  \nIn my first year of teaching, I read the story 'Paddington Bear' to the children in my class. I read a chapter a day out loud. We made marmalade jam, Paddington's favourite food, and the children each wrote letters to the author to tell him how much they liked his book. We were amazed when we actually got a reply. It was written by Paddington Bear himself and signed with a special paw print!  \nSince then, I have done literacy work indifferent communities in languages other than English. I have often wished I could translate my favourite English stories into the languages spoken around me, so that children could enjoy them just as much as those children in my very first class.  \nHowever, stories written in one culture don't always fit in another one. For example, in the Angor story about Cockatoo and Crow, it is hard to know why Cockatoo was angry with Crow if you don't know the finer points of making sago.  \nAlso, the cultures where I have lived are full of great stories. I have heard many wonderful stories from local story tellers, who keep people enthralled, listening intently,  \ndoubling over with laughter, or shedding a tear.  \nBut when I challenged these storytellers to write their stories down so the stories would continue to be shared, things often got lost between the telling and the writing, and the stories lost their sparkle, their flavour.  \nIt is challenging to write good stories-ones that will reach across the generations, and still be treasured and enjoyed. But it's avery worthwhile and important thing to do.
