It also addresses Smollett’s Travels Through France and Italy and its reflective view of a traveler’s mind, along with his lesser-known role in developing journalism. Richardson,Fielding and Sterne,Smollett set the Englishnovelon its way.His writing derived much from Cervantes and Le Sage, whose works he had translated, perhaps also from Roman comedy.Hisinfluence on later novelists, particularly on Scott and Dickens, wasconsiderable;and although read nowadays less than it deserves to be,it isfrom his work that probably all novels about the sea and the Englishsailor are descended.Smollett draws for us some of the first greatcharacters of the English novel;but also, especially in Humphry Clinker, his masterpiece, leaves us with a gallery of immensely vivid pictures oneighteenth-century England,‘with a record of a society',writesMr.Brander,'which was launching out to change the appearance of halfthe world. \nIn this essay Laurence Brander describes and analyses not onlySmollett's famous contributions to the art of the novel, but also deals withhis Travels Through France and Italy,'probably the first English book oftravel which is interesting because it reflects the state of a man's mind’,and with Smollett's lesser-known work in building up the profession ofjournalism. We turn to Smollett,as we turn to Fielding,Mr.Branderconcludes,‘for that humorous comment on life which is one of the greatlegacies of our indispensable eighteenth century'. \nLaurence Brander has published studies of George Orwell andSomerset Maugham. He has contributed the essays on Hood andThackeray in the present series, which he founded in I950. \n# Bibliographical Series\n\nof Supplements to 'British Book News'on Writers and their Work \n★ \nGENERAL EDITORGeoffrey
