Stressed hazel eyes stared back, a hint of worry lines across her brow. Moisture clung to her bare shoulders and face after the shower, a pink towel wrapped around her nude frame. Drops from her wet hair fell onto the soft bath rug beneath her feet. When dry, her natural curls draped in springy coils to mid-back, the color alight shade of brown.  \nHow will he take the news I’m dumping him? Will he be as miserable as I am?  \nJoshua’s promotion at work went from celebration to a need for separation. At first, Bethany and her boyfriend of eighteen months couldn’t have been happier. All his hard work at the corporation had paid off. Late nights at the office, toiling on weekends, and a mountain of stress finally led to achievement. She had been so proud of him. They took a vacation torevel in the good news, and that trip brought discussions of moving in together and a bright future.  \nUnfortunately, the promotion contained hidden difficulties that later spilled into the open. Bethany had been patient during his long hours and nights. Rare dates and short times together proved to be a challenge, but she thought all that would end after being elevated to the new position.  \nHowever, their relationship grew strained as Joshua now had to leave on several business trips across the world. The prior long hours turned into days and even weeks away. Phone calls and video chats became the norm, but even those dwindled into fleeting sets of “how are you” before another responsibility chased him off. Even when he returned from outings,  \ntheir time together drifted into lifeless dinners and drab conversation as future work trips hung over their heads.  \nBethany didn’t blame him, but she also didn’t want to be a victim of his success. He had worked so hard to reach his goals, just as she had. As much as she complained about her own job, she had also climbed a rickety ladder to earn her place in the world and feel gratified.  \nDuring the last few months of struggling to maintain their cold relationship, the arguments had grown worse. Bethany desired to move on with her life. Joshua wanted her to wait for him.  \nShould I? Perhaps I’m being too hasty in letting him go. Then again, our situation won’t improve any time soon. The higher Josh ascends his career business ladder, the farther I fall behind. I’m twenty-nine, and thirty is knocking. No, I need to end this. Sorry, Joshua, but our relationship is going nowhere.  \nBethany finished getting ready to meet Josh tonight. In another sign of why she had to move on, it had taken two weeks of planning just so they could see each other for a couple hours. Schedules had to be cleared, work reports turned in, and every last email read and responded to. They were finally having somewhat of a real date after months of nothing. Ironically, the well-coordinated evening of theater and dinner had only been to set the stage for “the talk”.  \nLike strapping on armor for battle, her breakup outfit consisted of a floral print Donna Karan square-neck dress with cross-back. The blue and white outfit would be further protected against angry retorts by a wool blend, notched-collar long coat by Ralph Lauren. The meticulous application of make-up represented her facial war paint. Hoop earrings provided head protection, and glittery bracelets served as a set of gauntlets.  \nReady for battle, Bethany sighed into the mirror one last time. Does he suspect what’s coming?
