By 2030, more thanhalf of the world’s extreme poor will live in countriescharacterized by fragility, conflict, and violence (FCV) .1Preventing and mitigating FCV challenges is key tomaking progress toward the Sustainable DevelopmentGoals (SDGs) and to the international community’sbroader efforts to promote peace and prosperity.  \nThe global fragility landscape has worsenedsignificantly in recent years, impacting both low-and middle-income countries. Violent conflictshave increased to the highest levels observed overthe past three decades.2 The world is also facing thelargest forced displacement crisis ever recorded.3Rising inequality, lack of opportunity, discrimination,and exclusion are fueling grievances and perceptions  \nof injustice. Climate change, demographic change,migration, technological transformations, illicit financialflows, and violent extremism are often interconnected,posing risks that transcend borders. Many countriesalso suffer from chronically poor governance.  \nThese factors can increase vulnerability to shocks andcrises and can create regional and global spillovers.They could cause devastating impacts, especially forwomen, children, youth and people with disabilities,that could be felt for generations. Without swift andeffective action, FCV risks could both erode gainsmade in the fight against poverty and undermine theprospects for further progress.  \nFaced with these dynamics, the World BankGroup (WBG) has been changing the way it worksin FCV settings. This work has evolved from afocus on post-conflict reconstruction to addressingchallenges across the full spectrum of fragility.
