With a few exceptions, peer support and psychological services are lacking for this population in law enforcement agencies. This gap then can lead to untreated mental health problems or even suicide. Today's session will provide specific information on the Retiree Peer Support Program developed with the collaboration of the Denver Police Training Department, Psychological Services and retirees. Emphasis will be placed on the logistics involved in setting up a retiree peer support program, getting departmental approval and commitment, recruitment and selection issues, training components and program activation.  \nSpeakers:  \nDr. John Nicoletti  \nPolice Psychologist Nicoletti -Flater Associates  \nDr. Nicoletti is a Colorado based Police Psychologist that works with numerous state law enforcement agencies around the country. In addition, Dr. Nicoletti provides Peer Support training and supervision for NCIS. His areas of specialty include CIT, Peer Support, threat assessment, pre-employment screening, Wellness evaluations or training, counseling services for officers' and family members, and Critical Incident and Extreme Event trauma recovery. Dr. Nicoletti was invited to assist PERF with the development of a protocol and training guide for dealing with individuals who are engaging in suicide by cop behaviors. He was also part of a team that developed the Preparing for the Unimaginable document for safeguarding officers' mental health after mass casualty events. Dr. Nicoletti has been on scene and assisted with the trauma recovery for several active shooter/mass casualty events including Columbine High School, Platte Canyon High School, Aurora theater Century 16 shooting and the STEM school shooting. Dr. Nicoletti's other area of specialty is workplace and school violence prevention as well as identification and disruption of insider threats. He has consulted with various nuclear facilities for the Department of Energy as well as being an invited speaker for the Insider Threat Conference. Most recently, Dr. Nicoletti has been utilizing his threat assessment model for identification and mitigation of Radicalization and Violent Extremism. He has been invited to present at international conferences cosponsored by NATO and Harvard in Venice Italy and Macedonia. Dr. Nicoletti is an active member of IACP and has presented at the annual conferences on a regular basis. He is also the past Chair of the Police Psychologists section of IACP and is a Board Certified Specialist in Police and Public Safety Psychology.  \nJohn Coppedge Lieutenant  \nDenver Police Department  \nJohn Coppedge has served as a police officer with the Denver Police Department since 1992 working in a variety of assignments. He currently serves as the Director of Training and Chief Firearms Officer, where he provides oversite for the departments recruit, in-service, and professional development training programs. Additionally, John supervises the departments employee wellness and resiliency program, and has volunteered as a peer counselor with the agency's Peer Support team since 2002. Prior to becoming a police officer, John served for 8 years in the United States Air Force.  \nJohn consults, publicly speaks, and provides training nationally and internationally on leadership, trauma, stress, peer support, resiliency, and suicide. He developed and teaches the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) three-day First Line Leadership training program and is a national instructor of their Leadership in Police Organizations course.
