ORIGINALS IN GREEK OR LATIN) \n(a)THE ONLY hymn in common use from the period before the yearAD 325 is 'Hail, gladdening Light'(18:a better version at EH 269).It is thought that certain lyrical passages in the New Testament maybe portions of very primitive hymns:such passages are Eph.5.14,I Tim.3.16,I Tim.6.15f,II Tim.2.11-13,Titus 3.4-7,Rev.15.3-4and Rev.22.17.If this is true,we have,as at 218v.5,occasionalsnatches of very primitive hymnody embedded in modern hymns. The same might be true of Rev.5.12 and hymn 221. \n(b)St.Ambrose(+397)Bishop of Milan, introduced a style ofhymnody which became the model for the monastic ‘office'hymn,so called because it became an integral part of the monastic religiousroutine or ‘office. An example is hymn 2,which is one of the threethat can with certainty be ascribed to Ambrose (the others are12—14 and EH 49).In this hymn, note (i)the metre, which wasnormal for all these Latin hymns—Long Metre rhyming (if at all)in couplets:the only other metre used in the early period for offcehymns was the ‘Sapphic'(11.11.11.5),as at 10;(ii)the asceticemphasis in v.3,recalling the monastic discipline with which thesehymns are associated, and (ii)the Trinitarian doxology at the end, asserting the Doctrine which in Ambrose's time was being form-ulated through","cbCaiiFMlOvA9roX","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiiFMlOvA9roX","pdf",1364839,"English","#
