skill, both in speaking and in writing. This ability can be measured ina written testby including a section on synonymswords having the same,or nearly the same, meaning asother words in the language. \nSynonym questions are used to test for ability to understand the meaning of words. They arealso good indicators ofreasoning ability and ability to learn. \nThe Word Knowledge subtest determines breadth of word knowledge through synonyms.Thewords used in the synonym questions are those used in everyday language by high school gradu-ates or those who have high school equivalency diplomas. The test questions are four-choiceitems and appear in either of the two following formats: \nFormat 1.Complete the definition of a key word. \nSample: \n1.Notorious mostnearly means1-A annoying.1-B condemned.1-C unpleasant.1-D well known. \nNotorious means well known, which is the same as choice D.Choices A and C are unrelated inmeaning since a notoriousperson may ormay notbe annoying orunpleasant.AlthoughchoiceBmaybejustsightly related in meaning,as notorious also implies being widely andunfavorably known, itdoesnotnecessarily imply being condemned.ChoiceDis the onlycorrectanswerofthe options given. \nSample: \n2.To assent means most nearly to \n2-A acquire. \n2-B climb. \n2-C consent. \n2-D participate. \nTo assent means to express aceptance or concurence.Choice C is almost the same in meaning.Choices A,B,andD are unrelated in meaning.Choice B is similar in meaning to the word “ascend”but not to “assent.” \nChoice C is the correct answer. \n\n| Chapter 4:Strengthening Your Weaknesses | 165 |\n| --- | --- |\n\nFormat 2.Choose the word that means the same as the key word in a sentence. \nSample: \nChoose the lettered word that means most nearly the same as the underlined word as it is usedin the sentence. \n3.The rear of the truck should be washed.3-A Back3-B Front3-C Hood3-DRoof \nReplace rear with each of the choices. The corect choice is the word that does not change themeaning of the sentence. In the previous question, the choice that is closest in meaning to theunderlined word is back. Therefore, choice A is the correct answer. \nAn excellent method of increasing your vocabulary is by developing and maintaining your ownword list.Write down every word you see or hear whose meaning you are not certain
