between the cosmology and anthropologyof the post-enlightened West and its consequences on the social imagination.Byevaluating conceptions of reality and self outside of our modern,socio-culturalmilieu,our deficits may be grasped more clearly.Medieval cosmology produceda particular social imagination that is wbolly foreign to contemporarysensibilities;bowever,one is unable to distinguish what constitutes theirimagination and its outworkings until they have been given a point of referenceIn this way,the medieval perspective is valuable to the post-enlightened West.First,the relationship betwveen cosmology and anthropology of the medievalmind will be considered.Second,the relationsbip between post-Enligbtenmentcosmology and anthropology will be considered and compared to the olderconception.Finaly,certain axioms of medieval anthropology wvill be drawn outand shown to be superior to the post-Enlightenment conception in theircoherence with a biblical cosmology and in the aspects of social imaginationwhich they produced.Specifically,place and role in the cosmic hierarchy,anthropological constitution,and origins of meaning will be evaluated enjoypeace and rest after his labors.This same ship carries Elrond,Galadriel,and Gandalf,three of the most influential and magical individuals of the  \nThird Age.With the destruction of the ring and the advent of the king,the time of the elves has passed,and the time of men has come.And asthe new age dawns,magic and myth leave the world.  \nIf one considers Tolkien's broader legendarium,this departure of themythical and magical elements of the cosmos as time passes becomes anapparent theme.2 Magic trickles down and disseminates until ultimately itdisappears entirely.While this is a work of fiction,Tolkien has struck atsomething profoundly true.Magic,myths,and wonder they engenderhave left our world.In the twenty-first century,we have every modernconvenience available to us,far more information than we could evermanage,and a comfortable explanation for most all phenomena in ourday-to-day experience.Our planet is a rock floating in a vast ocean ofsterility.Our emotions are biochemical reactions.Modern man has all theanswers.We live sterile lives driven by sterile ideas.Magic,myth,andwonder have left our world.  \nFrom the Enlightenment forward,the domesticated kitten of sciencegrew into a man-eating lion.Darwin,Freud,and Tesla have infiltrated usall far deeper than we would like to admit.Despite modern prejudices,medieval man lived with wonder.He lived with magic.We look to thestars and think of gaseous balls in a vacuum.Medieval man wondered ata cosmos teeming with life,movement,and beings traversing the celestialspheres centered on the Living God and Immovable Mover.  \nThe point then is this:ideas have consequences.As C.S.Lewis pointsout,the problem with our model is not that it is less scientifically accuratethan the discarded cosmology.3 The problem is the new cosmology's im-pact on social imagination and human consciousness is less desirable thanthe discarded cosmology,at least in some ways.In embracing the modernunderstanding of the
