It outlines how Catholic Action is defined through lay participation in the apostolate of the hierarchy and describes the four marks of Catholic Action. The text explains the spiritual and apostolic growth of Catholic women from baptism through sanctification, and how, under the bishop’s mandate and pastoral approval, women promote Christ’s Kingdom through prayer, example, and works within parish and broader Apostolic \nRecorded by \nCarol Rueckel \nDURING the past June and August, seven hundred and fifty womenacross the country were encouraged to deeper spirituality and in-creased work for Church and Council through thought-provoking discus-sions of the role of the Catholic woman in the modern world. As a keynoteaddress for the six NCCW Summer Leadership Training Institutes themeaning of \"Women at Work:The Spiritual and the Apostolic\"was ex-plored and developed by priests and moderators for the Catholic womenconvening at Institutes in North Carolina,New Jersey,Ohio,Texas,Iowaand Oregon. \nFor these discussions of the spiritual and the apostolic development ofwomen in Catholic Action, the National Council of Catholic Women wasprivileged to present at its Institutes Rev.Ernest L.Unterkoefler of Rich-mond,Virginia;Very Rev.Msgr.E.Leo McMannus of Rochester,New York;Right Rev.Msgr.Howard J.Carroll of Washington,D.C.;Most ReverendStephen A.Leven,D.D.,Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio;Very Rev.Msgr.Justin A.Driscoll of Dubuque,Iowa;and Rev.Francis L.Dowd,C.SS.R.of Portland,Oregon.Following each opening and formal presentationof \"Women at Work:The Spiritual and the Apostolic,\"the Institute par-ticipants devoted two daily \"buzz sessions\"of self-examination and thoughttoward the practical application of this Institute theme. \nSince the beginning of the Church,Catholic Action in its most generalsense has been needed and promoted by the Church.Only in relativelyrecent years, however, has the term assumed a special meaning and thework a special mission:the participation of the laity in the apostolate ofthe hierarchy. The lay apostolate, thus, signifies the great body of theChurch, exclusive of the hierarchy, the clergy and the religious.CatholicAction is that apostolic work which the laity performs for and at the callof the hierarchy. \nThe four marks of Catholic Action as defined by Canon Cardijn of Bel-gium are: \n1.)that it is lay work,in its conception as well as in its fulfillment, \n2.)that it is organized, with a distinction of directors, officers andmembers, \n3.)that it is mandated,as a bishop commissions his laity to share inhis work, \n4.)that it has as its aim complele and integral Catholicism. \nHistorical reasons may be cited for the tremendous concern with andgrowth of Catholic Action in the past century.Certainly materialism andsecularism have threatened our society as never before. And never beforehas the laity been so ready, intellectually and spiritually,to meet the chal-lenge of the age and to assist the bishops in their apostolic mission of \"re-storing all things in Christ.\" \n\"The layman finds himself at the very heart of the matter,\"says Mon-signor Gerard Philips in his book,The Role of the Laity in the Church.\"Ifthe Pope in person calls upon him,it is not to come to the aid of a flounder-ing clergy, nor is it a frantic appeal for the layman to take up the yoke andfree the clerical coach from the mire.It is not a question of saving thesad remnants of an outmoded theocracy;the very existence of the Christianworld is at stake.” \nGod has willed and ordained that the ultimate destiny of mankind—theirsalvation—be accomplished through the cooperation of men—bishops, priests and the laity, each according to his own function, but each with adefinite role. \nHow may we,as Catholic women, fulfill this definite role?We mustdevelop our individual spiritual resources, and we must channel theseresources and strengths into cooperative apostolic work. This is not toimply that complete spiritual development precedes and precludes apostolicwork. The spiritual and the apostolic development of the Catholic womanshould be one and simultaneous. As the Catholic woman grows spiritually, her acceptance of responsibility in the life of the Church increases.Noris this to imply that","cbCaidbFIbbgGtfE","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidbFIbbgGtfE","pdf",367156,"English","# Women at Work: The Spiritual and the Apostolic\n## Purpose
