\nThe“pre-season”began this year with aweek's run of Viveca Lindfors in I Ama Wom-an,a one-woman show conceived and arrangedby her and Paul Austin, who also directed it,and produced by Rita Fredricks. \nThere was perhaps double irony in Ferrerextolling the virtues of regional theatre and re-nouncing the vicissitudes of New York success, for here were Ms.Lindfors,Ms.Fredricks andMr.Austin,co-panelists aiming their show, bygolly,at Broadway.Ferrer was on hand for thepost-performance symposium because he was inCleveland to prepare a Play House production. \nAt the symposium,Ms.Fredricks told howFrancoise Gilot was solicited for permission touse material from\"My Life with Picasso\"butrefused,replying(and here Ms.Fredricks,her-self an actress, dropped into a French accent)that she objected to Ms,Lindfors extracting\"beets and teets\"from the work. \nIt is these bits and tits from writers like \nAUDIENCE□ \nBrecht,Anais Nin,Eldridge Cleaver and Mrs.Charles Manson which constellate into I Am aWoman without any comment from Ms.Lind-fors as to their special place in her life.Therapid succession of bits and tits of journalism, drama, diary entries and correspondence appar-ently led one Cleveland reviewer to concludethat it is the nondramatic material which is atfault in a show he found structureless,anti-climactic and,in one instance, coarse. On thecontrary, the journalism is the strongest materi-al:The description by one Ngo Thi at the ParisPeace Conference of abominations to the fe-male person...the “Who wouldn't want a wife?”piece from Ms magazine that is wittily irrefut-able with a devastating punch line.. \nBut the show might well perk up from Ms.Lindfors sharing some insight into the personalmeanings of so many thoughts that are spacedwith blackouts and with no real opportunity, from our place in the audience,to considerthem for a while. \nI Am a Woman has an elliptical qualityabout it that is something like her autobio-graphical notes in the program:“...at 25 wasoffered a contract with the City of Angels,Cal-ifornia,USA...went...stayed for 5 years, lostsight of the Ange/s.married again and had ababy boy...moved to N.Y....worked in the the-atre...studied with Lee Strasberg...married again.a Hungarian...became a star on Broadway andoff Broadway...etc.etc.\" \nIf I bring with me to the theatre the defici-ency of not knowing Brecht from Beckett orfrom Anais Nin,then perhaps I can't be ex-pected,in the meaning of the French verb fortheatre-going","cbCaibFbvpSytzsX","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibFbvpSytzsX","pdf",4236174,"English","# Womanwest of the Hudson - Number 53 - Article\n## Success and quality in regional theatre\n## Viveca Lindfors and I Am a Woman\n## Adaptation choices and audience experience","[{\"question\":\"What argument does the article make about theatrical success and quality?\",\"answer\":\"It challenges the idea that success always equals quality and criticizes shallow or deadline-driven reviews that can harm artists’ work.
