medical sciences at Cambridge Uni-versity.After graduation he moved to study thepractice of medical herbalism with the NationalInstitute of Medical Herbalists,founded in 1864and the oldest professional body of medical herba-lists in the western world.He graduated from its  \n4year training course and set upin practice in 1977.  \nHe has since been Director of Research for the Institute and for sixyears their President.He played an active part in setting new professionalstandards for the wide spectrum of complementary medicine and was thefirst Chairman of the Council for Complementary and AlternativeMedicine(CCAM),the first national association of major professionalbodies in the field,and was a founder trustee of the first research organisa-tion,the Research Council for Complementary Medicine (RCCM).  \nSince 1983 he has been a Council member of the British HerbalMedicine Association (BHMA),the body primarily engaged in settingpublic standards for herbal medicines,and negotiating with Governmenton such matters.In this role he was on the revision committee for theBritish Herbal Pharmacopoeia,which set unprecedented standards formedicinal plants and is used by government departments around theworld.He is also a BHMA delegate to the European Scientific Cooperativeon Phytotherapy(ESCOP)a European association of national organisationsconcerned with promoting at EC level,harmonised standards for thequality,safety and efficacy of medicinal plants.He is currently the leadingfigure in their research committee.  \nIn 1987 as a result of an initiative with a colleague,the University ofExeter set up the Centre for Complementary Health Studies,the firstuniversity centre of its type in the developed world.He is one of the twodirectors of the centre and is responsible for much fascinating research intoherbal medicine there.  \nSimon Mills has been a regular teacher on herbal medicine in the UKand in the USA,for many years making regular flights
