What this means is that although it is written in such a way that it can be read without simultaneously reading the Tractatus itself, it is intended tobe read by a reader who is studying the main text in such a way that they can refer to the guide while reading the Tractatus and vice versa.  \nThe Tractatus is a difficult text, and as a result there is considerable controversy as to its correct interpretation, not only in the detailed exegesis of particular paragraphs, but even over the question of what the book is about. There is no book on the Tractatus which will not provoke disagreement at some point or other. Inevitably I have developed in this guide a particular narrative, giving my own picture of the structure of the Tractatus and my interpretation of the key paragraphs, while indicating at various points where alternative readings have been offered. In the light of this, the reader should never simply accept what any author says when they write about the Tractatus, but always check what is said against the actual text. This obviously applies to the present guide as much as to any other work on the Tractatus.  \nLess obviously, this also applies to what Wittgenstein himself writes about the Tractatus in the Philosophical Investigations. Many readers will approach the Tractatus after having first encountered his later philosophy. One of the points of controversy in the current debate about the Tractatus is the extent of the continuity in Wittgenstein’s philosophy from the early to the late period of his thinking. My own view is that both the continuities and the discontinuities have been underestimated. The continuities have been underestimated in that he is for much of the time addressing  \nPREFACE  \nprecisely the same fundamental issues in the Investigations as he had been addressing earlier, and his later work can only be properly understood if it is seen in relation to the problems of the Tractatus. The discontinuities have been underestimated in that he radically rejects the approach he had earlier adopted to those problems.
