We teach students social skills and help them to make good choices. We teach social skills just as we teach math and language skills. Our goal is to help students who are having difficulty, change their behaviour. There are a number of ways that we do this. All TDSB schools use a Progressive Discipline whole school approach which involves prevention programs, interventions, supports and consequences to address inappropriate student behaviour and to build on strategies that promote positive behaviours. There are many factors (including mitigating factors) that are considered in a situation by situation approach and consequences are equitable but not necessarily equal.
We also use Restorative Practices to help students think about their actions and change their behaviour. In Restorative Practices there are a number of guiding questions that are part of the discussion with students. This includes: What happened? What were you thinking of at the time? What have you thought about since? Who has been affected by what you have done? In what way? What do you think you need to do to make things right? Guiding students to reflect on their actions, the affect their actions have on others and taking responsibility for fixing things, helps students develop their social skills and self regulation and are much more meaningful than,“I’m sorry.” Social skills are a big part of student achievement.
At Withrow P.S. teachers also use Second Steps and the MindUp Curriculum as proactive strategies to support all of our students.
Finally, our TDSB Director John Malloy says “We also recognize that equity does not mean treating all students in the same way, but rather, responding to the individual needs of each student by providing the conditions and interventions necessary to help that student succeed.”
Grade 6 to grade 7 Transition Night
On February 9 between 7—8:30 pm we will have the grade 6 to grade 7 transition night
We have invited 7 former Withrow students who were in either French Immersion or in the English Program.
These students have taken different paths to middle schools across the city to include alternative programs, English, French Immersion, and Extended French.
Come listen to their experiences and ask questions.
This invitation is for all grade 6 students and their parents to attend.

|

Camp Ooch
With Valentine’s Day coming up it is time once again time for our annual fundraiser for Camp Oochigeas (Ooch) . Camp Ooch is a volunteerbased organization which addresses the needs of kids with childhood cancers. It provides“fun, enriching and magical experiences” for these children and support for their parents. Unfortunately, the Withrow community has had students who have battled this terrible illness and Camp Ooch is something they have always looked forward to. From Feb. 7th to the 14th, students will be able to buy and send Valentine’s Day cards to their friends, family or teachers. The hearts will be displayed in the main hall of the school. The hearts will cost $1 each or 6 for $5 and all proceeds will go directly to Camp Ooch. We hope your children will be reminded of the importance of giving to the community and will participate in raising much-needed f","cbCaio9AfloZHYrE","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaio9AfloZHYrE","pdf",1890588,"English","# Special Dates
## Progressive Discipline
## Grade 6 to Grade 7 Transition Night
## Camp Ooch Fundraiser
## Winter Weather
### Recess During Cold Weather
## Special Education at Withrow","[{"question":"What is Progressive Discipline, and how does it apply at Withrow P.S.?","answer":"Withrow uses a whole-school Progressive Discipline approach that includes prevention programs, interventions, supports, and consequences.
