This year, the Secondary Center is home to Hazel. Hazel is not an administrator, teacher, or student, but she does have a job. She is a trained therapy dog who offers consolation, love, and assistance to people in a variety of locations, including hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and libraries.  \nHazel and her handler, Jacki Kasa, a special education teacher, strive to improve people's lives by lowering stress and anxiety, elevating mood, and boosting energy and performance.  \nBefore Hazel became a therapy dog she was a guide dog for the blind. To become a therapy dog, Hazel began training after she was born. She trained for eighteen months at the Guide Dog Foundation of New York.  \nShe retired as a guide dog at eight years old, which is a normal retirement age.  \nHazel is currently employed as a therapy dog at the Wyoming Area Secondary Center. Hazel's most important responsibility is to support students in managing stress, addressing mental health issues, and increasing their level of academic engagement.  \nAccording to special education teacher, Tina Yukenavage,“She makes me feel calm and less stressed.”  \nDuring Hazel’s first year atthe Secondary Center, she has helped improve the attitudes of staff and students under the weight of PSSAs, Keystones, SATs, CDTs, ASVABs, and AP testing. In addition to all of the everyday tests and schoolwork students are responsible  \nAbove: Hazel on a break in between classes  \nfor.  \nHazel also knows her way around the Secondary Center as if she were one of the students.  \nAll in all, Hazel is a trained therapy dog who works in various places to provide comfort, affection, and support to individuals in need.  \nWyoming Area continues to help Hazel create a legacy by doing what she does best.  \nDated to deluxe: Wyoming Area auditorium renovations  \nBy: Keimya Brown 2025  \nOver the last 12 months, the Wyoming Area Administration has been working to renovate and improve the Secondary Center auditorium, spending a little over $440,000 on back-of-the-house enhancements.  \nThe auditorium previously housed performance technology that was original to the school, which opened its doors in the fall of 1975. After almost fifty years, the curtains were worn, faded, and emitted an unpleasant odor. The equipment was also limited in capacity and use.  \nThe auditorium now boasts an upgraded, intricate light system, advanced projectors and sound systems, and freshly installed curtains.  \nWyoming Area Drama Club Technical Director, Chuck Yarmey, is very pleased with the auditorium  \nenhancements. He believes investing in the school is always a good idea.  \nThe improvements are not just for the Drama Department because “The auditorium is used by every student who goes through the Secondary Center at one time or another.” He says,“While the new technology will be helpful to the arts wing of the school, it is also going to be used for other purposes relating to the entire school.”  \nYarmey firmly states that the new tech equipment makes a big difference. He says the improvements were evident in the Drama Club’s 2024 fall show. The Play That Goes Wrong. He comments on the vividness and complexity of the new light system, allowing better control and variety for the light crew. He says the new  \nspeakers enabled clearer sound and filled the room during shows. Lastly, he mentions the beauty of the refurbished curtains and says they are“extremely helpful with their new rigging.” He explains that the leg curtains can be moved towards or away from center stage, and they have the ability to rotate and help close off certain areas.  \nThe changes in the new equipment play a huge role in the storytelling and professionalism of the Wyoming Area Drama Club’s productions.
