201ForcesofNature \n2010-201PRESIDENT'S REPORINSID \nNORTHERN EXPOSURE \nIn the name of research, one student set off forthe Yukon in a rebuilt car—that doubled as a hotel \nTHE ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHT OF SHANE HUGHES'college career began,of all places,on Craig'sList. For sale;1986 Subaru GL,manual trans-mission,218,000 miles,$600. \nPerfect.It met his two requirements—four-wheel drive and within his college-stu-dent budget. He bought it,changed the oil andtransmision fluid, flushed the radiator, replacedthe outer tie rods, adjusted the engine timing, neplaced the timing belt, rebuilt the carburetor, and added four new tires and a windshield. \nThen,in a car that was built three years \nbefore he was born and had more than200,000 miles on it,Hughes set out—alone—for the Yukon Territory at the edge of theArctic Circle to meet and study the nativeHan people of the First Nation tribes. The tripwas part of a Brueggeman Fellowship, whichsends students on research projects around theworld. He was curious to know how the Hanwere preserving their culture, and the onlyway to find out was to go there and ask them. \nSo he put his rebuilt car in gear on June \n21,and took off, making his way through the \nKlondike highways into Alaska and theYukon. \nIt was an adventure only a college studentcould—or probably would—embark upon.Hughes,a senior majoring in history and the-ology,dined on canned food,a lot of beansand the best Oreo cookies ever. When thefront wheel bearings on the Subaru went bad,he changed them in the parking lot ofa NapaAuto Parts store in Montana. \nThe car soon became his home.Around \n1:00 a.m.somewhere in South Dakota, thethunder and lightning drove Hughes from his \ntent into the refuge of his car. While he wasdozing off,he felt a smalltugging on his pajamalegs.Convinced it was a mouse,he zipped up hissleeping bag and flicked on the flashlight.Butthe creature was gone.He didn't really mind thatthe mouse, like himself, was using his car to getout of the rain. But he didn't want it suddenlyscrambling up his shins. So the next day,he worehis pant legs tucked into his socks. It didn’t mat-ter.He never saw the little guy again. \nThe mouse was the first of many wild crea-tures Hughes encountered, along with bison, elk, caribou, moose and grizzly bears.Butresearch was the main objective,so Hughes'first stop was Dawson City,Alaska. The Han arean indigenous people who relied on huntingand fishing, mostly caribou and salmon, beforegold rush prospectors and settlers cut the trees, thinned the game and salmon runs, and builtcities where Han people now live. \n\"I was disappointed in what I found,\"hesays.\"I started at the cultural center. But every-thing seemed to go downhill from there.Thelanguage is all but gone. There are only twopeople left who speak it fuently in Dawson.\" \nHe interviewed about 15 Han people.None live the way their ancestors did butinstead live in modern houses, work jobs andbuy their food at the grocery store.“There is adesire to preserve tradition, but it's now moreof an acceptance that it's going away and notcoming back,\"he says.“The older generation Italked to,I got the sense their culture is goingaway and they're sad.\" \nHe put 10,000 miles on the Subaru, andexcept for a broken exhaust pipe that roared thewhole way home, the car was intact. So was he,ifnot a bit thinner and sleep-deprived. \nIt took Hughes a while to realize the extentof what he'd done.\"While reading about theHan in Cincinnati, they seemed so distant.Andthen getting there and realizing these peopleactually exist and meeting them in person wasreally extraordinary.\" \nNow he catches himself thinking back to hisdays in the gold country, where the sun neversets and motorists usually find themselves aloneon the limestone highways, wondering whatdelightful gift of nature will surprise them next. \n“One time I had my windows down, and Icame on a bear on the side of the road.I stopped.Suddenly he sits up really fast, and I rolled up thewindows. But he wasjust rolling over.” \nTo Hughes'","cbCaihrYAzF89UvU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihrYAzF89UvU","pdf",413517,"English","#
