\nAs Rosemary's story unfolds,a delightful familypicture emerges. It never occurs to Rosemary tofeel sorry for herself,as she and Billy wash andpolish the old station wagon and help with thepacking for the family's move to the beach forthe summer.Necessary precautions assume theform of games,in which the whole family par-ticipates,with rewards and forfeits \nThere are two things which Rosemary wants forher birthday. One is a cake with pink frosting, because pink is cool and crinkly and spicy, likethe pink carnation her mother pinned to her coatone Sunday. The other is a gift too important toeven hope for. \nHow this one gift opens windows for Rosemaryon an exciting future is told with sympathy andrare understanding. \nThis unusual story will give hope and guidanceto come and a deeper writing this little story was three-fold.I wanted if possible to show sighted children thata blind child is not someone to be pitied and possiblypatronized a little, but a perfectly normal fellow school-mate with keen perceptions and an appreciation of allthe ordinary activities that are part of a child's day. \nFurther,I hoped to show to sighted children thealmost desperate interest a blind child has in everymeans of bringing him (or her)closer to the limitlessworld of beauty through sound and touch -as inRosemary's case through her typewriter. In this con-nection I was especially interested to learn at TheLighthouse that a typewriter holds a particular fascin-ation for all blind children from the age of five or sixon up. \nTo the dismayed parents of babies born blind,Itried to show without exaggeration that their childrenmay look forward to full, happy lives so long as they, the parents, assume a happy, loving, unsentimentalattitude toward them, giving them a combined senseof security and independence which is not a crutch tolean upon but simply a firm hand to lead the way whennecessary. \nForeward \nAnd last, for the blind children themselves,I hopedthat in this very simple little story which is little morethan a short series of anecdotes, there might be enter-tainment(perhaps of a faintly inspirational sort hereand there by way of leavening). \nI want to thank Miss Leah Katz of The Lighthousefor her interest and gracious help and advice. \nMarguerite Va","cbCaiuoYJ4lKadP6","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuoYJ4lKadP6","pdf",3535113,64,"English","#
