We encourage you to make reading a part of your child’s daily routine. Set aside time to read together as a family, model independent reading for your child, and take a trip to your local library and sign up for their Summer Reading Program! \nSuggested Family Reading: \nOur Early Childhood Educators have picked some of their favorite read-aloud stories to begin the school year. We highly recommend reading the following books aloud, as a family, in the weeks leading up to the beginning of the school year: \nKarst, Patrice. The Invisible String. \nWhen Liza and Jeremy run to their mother during a scary storm, she comforts them by telling them about the Invisible String, which connects people who love each other no matter where they are and means that they are never alone. \nLevi, Ganit & Adir. What Should Danny Do? \nA choose-your-own-adventure story that follows real-life superhero-in-training Danny as he learns about his most important superpower of all, the power to choose. \nLevi, Ganit & Adir. What Should Darla Do? \nDarla is a young and spunky astronaut-in-training. She wants to go to Mars one day, just like her favorite doll, Astronautica. But, to do so, she' ll need to practice using her Power to Choose wisely. \nPenfold, Alexandra. All Are Welcome. \nIllustrations and simple, rhyming text introduce a school where diversity is celebrated, and songs, stories, and talents are shared. \nPenn, Audrey. The Kissing Hand. \nWhen Chester the raccoon is reluctant to go to kindergarten for the first time, his mother teaches him a secret way to carry her love with him. \n4 \nWohnoutka, Mike. Dad ’s First Day. \nOliver and Dad have spent a fun summer together, but when it comes time for the first day of school, Dad discovers that he is not ready and does everything he can to postpone the big day. \nWoodson, Jacqueline. The Day You Begin. \nOther students laugh when Rigoberto, an immigrant from Venezuela, introduces himself, but later he meets Angelina and discovers that he is not the only one who feels like an outsider. \nOther Suggested Reading: \nPicture Books: \nAshman, Linda. Rain \nAs an old man grumbles his way through a rainy morning, spreading gloom, his neighbor, a young child, spreads cheer while hopping through puddles in frog-themed rainwear. \nBailey, Jenn. A Friend for Henry \nHenry would like to find a friend at school, but for a boy on the autism spectrum, making friends can be difficult, as his efforts are sometimes misinterpreted, or things just go wrong--but Henry keeps trying, and in the end he finds a friend he can play with. \nBarnes, Derrick. The King of Kindergarten \nInstilled with confidence by his parents, a young boy has a great first day of kindergarten. \nBarnett, Mac.
