It highlights willow’s mineral contributions, especially cobalt needed for growth and health, along with zinc linked to healthy development. A story of a British farmer describes practical methods for feeding fresh willow, coping with drought, and even preparing willow “hay” for winter.","Willow for Healthier Lambs A Natural Tonic for Sheep \nlevel: intermediate \nEnglish Agriculture \nWillow for Healthier Lambs A Natural Tonic for Sheep \nIt was inspired by an Innovative Farmers webinar and also uses material \nfrom the public domain. \nIllustrated by MissionAssist \nEnglish \nOxfordshire, England \nCopyright © 2023, MissionAssist \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. A sheep farmer in Britain – let’s call him George — has found that his ewes and lambs do better when combining willow leaves and stems with their normal diet of grass. \nThis is because willow contains useful amounts of cobalt, which is an essential mineral for the animals’ growth and health. Grass alone cannot provide enough of this during the warmer drier months when the lambs are growing fast \nFor this reason, many sheep farmers give supplements to their flocks to make good the deficiency. However, these supplements are expensive, and take up valuable farmer time to administer. But given the opportunity, the animals will happily self-supplement with willow. As well as cobalt, which is used to make vitamin B12, the willow also provides the lambs with zinc, which is another important mineral for healthy growth. \nBeing a fairly damp country, Britain has a number of native species of willow that are suitable for use as animal fodder. Two common species are white willow (Salix alba) and goat willow (Salix caprea); both are equally good sources of the essential minerals. \nGeorge has both kinds of willows growing on his land and, like other farmers, he had already noticed that his sheep enjoyed browsing their leaves whenever it was possible for them todo so. \nNow, though, as part of a university-based research project, George decided to observe his flock more closely while deliberately adding willow to their diet. He began by using avery labour-intensive method: stripping the leaves off the stems and placing them in buckets for the lambs to eat. \nAfter a while, though, George found that just cutting off whole branches of willow ","cbCaiaF2KzT9aKCc","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaF2KzT9aKCc","pdf",727220,1,17,"English","en",105,"# Overview\n## Why Willow Helps\n## Feeding Methods\n## Benefits During Growth and Winter\n## Growing Willow on a Farm","[{\"question\":\"Why does willow improve lamb growth and health?\",\"answer\":\"Willow provides useful cobalt, an essential mineral for animals’ growth and health.
