Serpentine Galleryexpects to include a series of one-man shows. This is thefirst of them-an exhibition of sculpture by William Tuckerspanning the years 1970 to 1973.It consists of a selection ofhis work from those that he showed at the Venice Biennale tovery recent pieces.A few works not physically present in thisexhibition are reproduced in the catalogue. Thus the exhibi-tion offers a conspectus of three to four years in the workinglife of one of our leading sculptors. Both the range of hisinquiry and the inner coherence of his production are mademanifest. \nWe are privileged to reprint the introduction Andrew Forgewrote for the Venice catalogue and will not attempt to add tohis comments on the stature and character of Tucker's work.Tucker's influence has been important ever since the middle1960s;recently he has also made a very considerable mark asa critical historian of twentieth-century sculpture. We believehim to be one of the most able and energetic of artistsworking in Britain today and take pride in having thisopportunity to show his work. \nNorbert LyntonDirector of Exhibitions \n# 8Shuttler
