The National Book Leagueby Longmans,Green &Co. \nTwo shillings and sixpence net \nWilliam Blake lived seventy years(1757-1827)mostly in poverty andobscurity, although for a great stretch of that time he was in full creativevigour. His impact on his contemporaries was wholly incommensuratewith his genius;yet ever since his death he has been recognized as havingpossessed one of the most original minds, both as a poet and as a painter, that this country has ever known.Few of the National Collections arewithout their fine examples of his pictures, while his better-knownpoems are now part of the current coin of English literature.Theexploration of his genius,as Miss Raine shows in this essay,is still con-tinuing. \nMiss Raine's poetry and critical articles have been appearing since theI930's in literary periodicals of the highest reputation in England andAmerica. In her volumes of poetry, she has disclosed an art andexperience that give her rare qualifications to write of Blake with insightand authority. Her Collected Poems appeared in I9s6. \nIn the last few years she has devoted much specialized study andresearch to Blake, and has a full-length book on him now in activepreparation. In her view he‘is a figure whose stature overtops all butthe greatest men of genius that England—or for that matter, the westernworld—has known'. \n-lcc INo: \n# Bibliographical
