booklet is written and published withthe firm belief that modification of the Volsteadlaw is inevitable and the longer the fight is con-tinued against any change in the law the moredangerous or damaging it will be to the cause ofprohibition and temperance. \nThe work and education of a century in thiscountry on temperance is liable to be lost becauseof a few extremist and intolerant leaders with aconsiderable following of good and sincere peoplewho take it for granted their leaders are rightor they would not be leaders in a good cause. \nCopyright 1927 byBURTON PUBLISHING COMPANYKansas City,Missouri \nThere is a vast difference between temper-ance—what the W.C.T.U.have taught for yearsand intollerance—what some of the prohibitionleaders have been teaching the last few years. In fact intolerance can well be classed as intem-perance of a very dangerous nature—because italways leads to trouble. \nCapable leadership is essential in the successof any cause and prohibition is no exception tothe rule. The 1926 election returns in stateswhere prohibition was an issue can only be con- \nstructed as a solemn warning to real honest-to-goodness prohibitionists—not extremists.Thesereturns of two to one and three to one for amodfied liquor law is pretty good evidence thatthe greatest need of the prohibition cause todayis some leader who is a big enough general toknow the value of retreat—especially when hehad led his army so far into the enemies territoryas to jeopardize the cause he is fighting for bybeing outnumbered three to one. \nIf the prohibition leaders continue in theirrefusal to compromise, arbitrate, retreat or makea peace settlement with those who oppose theirextremesthey are sure to eventually to lose thelead they now have. And when they lose thatlead, some one else will have it,and it may bethe extremists of the other side who are againstany form of prohibition. \nThe reader will find no opposition to theEighteenth Amendment in this booklet—providinga satisfactory and legal way,can be found tomodify the Volstead law.The writer is,and isknown as a total abstainer and would not give twocents for all the liquor in the country for his ownuse. His purpose in the discussion of the varioustopics is to illustrate why prohi","cbCaicWkFMpvnpwb","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicWkFMpvnpwb","pdf",1733593,41,"English","# INTRODUCTION\n##
