L.Kwon \nIam a native Korean, born into a Presbyterianminister's famly. When Iwas three months old,my parents were commissioned to go to Chinaas missionaries, and as I was growing up,Ithought I was Chinese becausel grew up amongChinese and my first language was Chinese. \nDue to the political situation at that time,Iwas sent to Japanese schools in China and hadto learn Japanese as my second language.Myparents saw the danger of my losing my identityas a Korean,so they hired a young Korean Chris-tian woman to live with us.Every day after Icame home from school, she bombarded mewith the Korean language. \nI almost had an overdose of Christianity athome and school! For example,on Sunday weattended sunrise prayer meeting at 5:00 a.m.,Chinese Sunday school from 8:30 to 10:00,morning worship at Father's church from 10:30to 12:00,Japanese Sunday school at 2:00 p.m.,missionary family prayer meeting at 4:00,Ko-rean youth group meeting at 6:00 and eveningworship in the Chinese church at 7:30!My par-ents believed that the more Christian influenceone received through the church program, thestronger Christian one would become. And theychose to send me to Japanese public school totest their Christian education and my Christianbeliefs. \nThe thought of being a minister came to mymind when I was about eight or nine years old.As I think back,I believe the idea came frommy grandmother,a first-generation Christian. She dedicated her first son—my father—to bea missionary. And when that prayer was an-swered,she began to ask God to make me—herfirst granddaughter—a minister and missionarylike Mary Magdalene.Grandmother's prayerkept ringing in my mind.I began to questionmyself;would Idare to be a minister? My father,a strong, devout, pietistic, puritanical Presby-terian,could not agree with the idea.n facthe was very opposed to having women ministersin the Presbyterian Church.(He even discour- \nElizabeth Kwon at \nthe National Meeting \nof United Presbyterian \nWomen,July 1976. \naged me from going to seminary. And,at thattime, only the Methodist seminary in Japanwould accept women.) \nWhen I was in the eighth grade,I contractedtuberculosis and had to be hospitalized for threemonths.Unable to continue my education,Ihad to live away from home for two years witha Chinese Christian woman. That was the timeI wrestled with this question:Why did God bringme into the world and for what purpose?Everyweekend Father came to stay with me;heprayed for me and with me.t was the periodof decision-making,and I pledged
