Khim Likkhena  \nHour Leng  \nIn a rural village in Cambodia, there lived a beautiful young woman and a handsome young man . They loved each other and decided to marry.  \nSoon after the wedding, the rains began. It rained for many days until, finally, the sky cleared.  \nAs the couple walked to their parents’ homes, they left footprints on the muddy path. Suddenly, a rat snake appeared. It had poison  \nin its tongue. The rat snake knew that if itflicked its tongue on the footprints left on the ground, the person who left the footprints could die.  \nThe rat snake flicked its tongue on the footprints of the beautiful bride and, soon after, she died.  \nThe groom, who had lost his love so soon after his wedding, was heartbroken .  \nHe cried for days as he prepared a funeral to soothe the spirit of his bride.  \nThe villagers gathered for the funeral.  \nWhen he saw the villagers all gathered together, the rat snake asked the other animals,”Why are they having a feast?”  \n”What do you mean?” said the rabbit.”They are mourning the death of the bride. They are having a funeral.”  \nThe mouse added,”The bride is dead, but your poison isn’t strong enough  \nto scare the villagers. If it were, the villagers would hide in their homes shaking in fear.”  \nThen the rabbit said,”Your poison is weak. Maybe the villagers think you are no big deal.  \n”  \nThe rat snake, who dreamed of being the king of the animals, wanted people and animals to fear him.  \nHe thought that fear was the same as respect and dignity.  \n”If I spit out all of the poison in my body, the villagers will fear and respect me .”  \nThe rat snake took a deep breath and…”Kaaaaaaaaaa!” spat out every ounce of poison inside him.  \n”The rat snake is spitting out his poison!” the animals yelled.  \nWhen they saw the poison on the ground, the honey bees, centipedes, snakes, and thorn fish gathered around. They took turns drinking up the poison the rat snack had spat out.  \nNow the honeybees, centipedes, snakes, and thorn fish were poisonous.  \nAnd what happened to the rat snake? He was no longer poisonous. He slithered away and lived quietly in the woods.  \n8  \nMy name is Likkhena and I was born in Cambodia. I lived in  \nKorea for 11 years before returning home.
