It introduces bioluminescence as a chemical process involving luciferase and luciferin, along with additional molecules found in the firefly’s body. What creates the spark within them?
They’re bright and twinkling, like little stars. I w ish I could glow like them, but I can’t.
Can anyone tell me why they glow?
2

|

3 |
| --- |
| Imagine a dark moonless night, and you are in the |
| woods with your classmates. You lose your way. What |
| would you do? |
| Would you try contacting your friends by flashing your |
| torchlight? |
| |

Well, fireflies do the same. However, they have an unlimited supply of light within themselves! Fireflies never need to worry about fused light bulbs or electricity tariffs. They seem happy just to fly around and glow.
Their glow is a signal to say,“Hey, look! I’m here!”
4

|

5 | |
| --- | --- |
| The glow inside the firefly is produced by three things, a | |
| called luciferase, a called luciferin, and | |
| .
| |
| are special molecules used to create body | |
| structures, such as muscles, bones and skin. are | |
| natural colouring substances found in animals and | |
| plants. When luciferase and luciferin meet inside the tiny | |
| belly of the firefly, they react with the already | |
| found in there. | |

Then, a celebration takes place like a soft firework display, and bright light is produced. This is the ‘glow’ of the firefly.
Fireflies are bioluminescent, but they are not the only creatures that create light. Different types of fish and marine creatures also produce their own lights.
6

|

7 |
| --- |
| The glow of the firefly functions like a light switch. The |
| firefly periodically turns its glow on and off. It sends a |
| special ‘message’ from its brain to the ‘light organ’ inside |
| its abdomen. Soon the chemical reaction begins and the |
| glow is produced. |
| |

The male fireflies use their ‘glow’ to call out to the females. Once the females see this special glow, they respond by switching on their own lights. The fireflymates soon meet, and baby fireflies get created.
Female fireflies prefer ‘flashy males’ that can blink the longest or at a faster pace.
8","cbCaifdCvhbRKmml","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifdCvhbRKmml","pdf",6023593,18,"English","# Fireflies in the Dark
## Why They Shine
## What Creates the Glow
## The Glow as Communication","[{"question":"Why do fireflies glow?","answer":"Fireflies produce a glow from chemical reactions in their bodies and use it as a signal.
