A raccoon tips over a trash can with clever black-mitten paws, an owl slides silently between the trees, and a bat swoops after a moth over the porch light. These are nocturnal animals, creatures that sleep through the day and go to work when the sun goes down. Can you imagine having your busiest hours at midnight?
To live in that midnight world, nocturnal animals need a body kit made for the dark,
starting with their eyes. Many of them, like owls and foxes, have huge eyes that soak up every bit of moonlight the way a big net catches more fish. Behind those eyes is a mirror-like layer called thetapetum lucidum, which bounces light back through the eye for a second chance to see. That mirror is also the reason a cat's or raccoon's eyes seem to glow when your flashlight hits them at night.
Bouncing light around only works if there is light, so animals that hunt in total blackness listen instead. An owl's face is shaped like a satellite dish that funnels tiny sounds toward its ears, and it can hear a mouse tiptoeing under the snow. Bats go one step further and shout out squeaks, then listen for the echoes bouncing back, a trick called echolocation. Those clicks let a bat picture a flying insect in the dark, which is why it can catch hundreds of mosquitoes in a single night.
Sharp ears help you find dinner, but a good nose helps you find it without any light at all. An opossum sniffs out fallen fruit and beetles, and a red fox can smell a mouse buried beneath the leaves before it ever sees it. Even a moth uses smell in an unusual way, following the scent of a flower or a mate on the breeze for what may be a very long distance. With feathery antennae acting like a nose, some male moths can detect a single female from far across a field.
All these tools add up to a simple, clever plan: work the night shift and skip the crowd. When most animals are asleep, a nocturnal creature faces fewer hungry hunters and finds insects and fruit all to itself. The next time a costumed friend rings your doorbell on Halloween, remember that real trick-or-treaters are out in the yard too, in fur and feathers. And the glow you might catch in your flashlight beam is just an owl or a raccoon, staring
back with its built-in mirrors.
Who Is Awake at Night?
Name:

| Solve each problem.
Use the article to answer the question.
1) What does the word 'nocturnal' mean as it is used in the passage?
A.
